The Centre for Deliberation has been reflecting on experiences deliberating with the public on climate-related issues and identified three challenges to consider: pessimism, profit and uncertainty. This blog shares how these challenges shaped the agreed vision and principles, as well as offers thoughts on how a balance of storytelling and evidence can help re-imagine how we deliberate on climate. https://lnkd.in/gnHwchfY #ClimateChange #PublicDialogue #CitizensAssemblies

I help communities benefit from clean, local, #solar energy | Advancing the transition to #renewableenergy with VCT Group | Design for social and planetary good
This topic of climate change misinformation and how divisive it can be occupies a lot of space in my mind. This conversation last night between Fatima Syed Janna Wale Juan Moreno-Cruz and Sarah Burch was a soothing antidote, if only for an hour or so. I took away so much, including: - connect with nature, and each other, often. Develop a relationship with, and a responsibility for, this land. Walk through the grass with no shoes. Stop to listen to the pinecones open in the spring... - the importance of talking about what's working re: climate action, because only talking about how bad the situation is drives dread, fear and anxiety, and makes us more susceptible to conspiracy theories and misinformation. - a huge motivator for action comes from a desire to see our local community thrive. Engaging locally makes this big topic of climate change more tangible, and actionable. Action and participation are often great remedies for feeling the weight of the work that's yet to be done. - companies (RBC and Enbridge were named) who benefit from the success of the oil and gas sector and climate inaction put some serious money and people power into making sure things stay the same. "They are cleverly winning the information game". We all need to think critically about their behaviour. - and so so much more insight from panelists and thoughtful audience questions. Thanks you for making this happen University of Waterloo and Waterloo Climate Institute. More please!
In an era where climate change is more visible than ever — from extreme weather events to rising urban temperatures — the fight against climate misinformation has never been more critical. At the recent TRuST lecture, hosted by the University of Waterloo in collaboration with the Waterloo Climate Institute, experts from various fields came together to discuss how misinformation hampers climate action and what can be done to restore public trust in science. The discussion underscored the need for transparent communication, accessible climate data, and a values-based approach to talking about climate change with family and friends. From blending Indigenous ways of knowing with scientific research to addressing disinformation funded by fossil fuel interests, the conversation provided a roadmap for building climate resilience through trust. Early this year, the Center for Countering Digital Hate exposed the new ways climate change denial is spreading and how much social media is monetising climate hate content. They have also contacted a couple of the subjects exposed, like Google and Youtube, who responded positively to the request to pay more attention to the phenomenon. Good media outlets also stood up, raising the visibility of the study. We can now look at the results. Well done! #ClimateChange #ClimateDenial #OnlineHate #FightMisinformation

Account Director, Civic Planning @ Arch Street Communications | Events Co-Chair @ IAP2 Northeast Chapter | Public and Stakeholder Engagement
I learned a lot from today’s Climate Communication: Beyond the Ballot 🗳 panel, which featured valuable insights from representatives of TIME, Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, MCJ, Sierra Club, and Redwood Climate Communications. Some of my main takeaways from this exciting discussion included: 1. Take advantage of local examples, recent success stories 🥇 , and the tangible benefits of climate action. 2. To connect with younger Americans, go beyond environmental concerns and discuss themes around #ClimateJustice in your messaging. 3. One persuasive way to connect with those who are not interested in climate change to help them connect the dots—what they love 💖 is at stake because of climate change. #ClimateWeekNYC #ArchStreetCommunications
