Susan M. Cheng, Ed.L.D., MPP and I are seeking input on what women and women of color administrators in higher education need for their own personal, professional, and collective well-being and development. We are two fellows from The Equity Lab Seeding Disruption cohorts in Washington, DC, and we are looking to understand and co-construct spaces of thriving and wellness for women of color and women in higher education. This is a voluntary, empathy conversation, where we are seeking to understand, what women and women of color in higher education are seeking for their own sustainability and wellness. This is not a research study. To learn more about the Seeding Disruption Fellowship Program, please visit https://lnkd.in/eFZ6HSV9. To register for the empathy focus groups, please visit here: https://lnkd.in/eugRJwq4 All the best, Susan Cheng & Samantha Cohen

Trifecta complete! We are thrilled to share a little more about the 3rd panelist for our Tough Cookies Luncheon on April 4th at the Overland Park Convention Center. We are thrilled to have the INCREDIBLE Fahteema Parrish, BS, MA ITMgt, ENV SP, President & Founder from Parrish & Sons Construction Co be a part of this powerful conversation. Get to know more about Fahteema: 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡 As the Owner, President, and Founder of Parrish & Sons Construction, my journey is a colorful tapestry woven from childhood memories and the guiding wisdom of my father. Picture this: a little girl accompanying her dad on HVAC service calls to neighbors, friends, and community spaces. That was me—immersed in the world of fixing, teaching, and spreading goodwill. Despite an early nudge toward a different path, I embraced higher education, delving into Information Technology, embarking on a two-decade journey as a Software Engineer, steering global teams. Yet, amidst the tech whirlwind, the call to serve my community echoed louder. Drawing from my experiences, I found pride in failures, using them as stepping stones to smarter, more impactful work. My dad's advice to pursue education laid the foundation for a legacy—a business aimed at creating careers for many. This journey, rooted in lessons from a humble beginning, continues to shape my vision—to mentor, to build, and to leave a lasting impact on those around me. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬? We should always encourages girls to let their light shine bright, illuminating the way for others without ever dimming your own radiance. It's about creating those safe spaces where everyone's voice is not just heard but celebrated. It's in these spaces that challenges become conquerable puzzles, and solutions bloom from collective wisdom. So, let's ignite those sparks of inspiration and build a world where every light shines and empowers those around us! By joining us on April 4th, you will be able to hear this powerful conversation, network with other business and community leaders and join to advocate for more confidence-building opportunities for girls by supporting Girl Scouts. Teachers "prefer to learn at their own pace" through online professional development, but they also want to "chew on the information with other people who have gone through the same thing" in face-to-face training. So explains a Minnesota school district administrator, talking about the mix of virtual vs. in-person of PD he wants. In a new story in EdWeek Market Brief, Emma Kate Fittes and I look at at the results of a survey the EdWeek Research Center conducted for us on the balance of online vs. in-person PD school districts are using now -- and what they predict the mix will be 5 years from now. #edtech #professionaldevelopment. https://rebrand.ly/p7px40n

2023 brought more inspiration, clarity, and exhaustion than I've experienced in a long, long time... maybe ever. I gathered a few of my thoughts in our annual Founder's Note: "Ten years ago, my classmates and I decided to continue working on a class project after graduation. It was called 'Brain Busters' (a regrettable name that was naturally already taken by a wrestling duo). It was an interactive game to help people learn about neuroscience and society. It was also one of the earliest iterations of The Plenary, Co. model. We’ve embraced several evolutions since then. We’ve facilitated workshops, led free science communication trainings across campuses, developed undergraduate courses and multidisciplinary frameworks, curated artworks, designed curriculum, and even did a brief stint as social platform developers. Some of these experiments were successes and others were... not. But regardless of the outcome, each was an exploration of what could be. They were our attempts to answer the question: if we used what we collectively know about how people stay open, connected, and inspired around ideas, what kind of system would we build? In 2023, we used every learning and insight from the past decade to sculpt a series of experiences that challenge today’s norms for how communities explore ideas, who should be at the center of the conversation, and what it looks like to intricately braid curiosity and creativity together in pursuit of wellbeing for people and the planet. These were our biggest experiments yet. And after ten years of testing and iterating, we’re proud to finally have our answer to that question. Now it’s time to build it." I can't wait for this next phase, and I'm so immensely grateful for all of the stubbornly hopeful and imaginative people who have walked with us this far. Don't forget to rest, yall. We've got a lot of work to do.
We may be a quarter of the way through 2024, but we're still glowing from everything our team learned, built, and experienced in 2023. Our Annual Report is now live! A few highlights: 🌱 We hosted thousands of participants at an interactive art show on civically-critical scientific ideas in downtown San Francisco, featuring inspirational illustrators like Islenia Mil and Aashti Miller. 🌱 We partnered with brilliant independent makers like CASITA MICHI to craft multisensory experiences and answer age-old questions, like what does imagination ✨smell✨ like? 🌱 We hit a major milestone of reaching over one million students through our I Am a Scientist program, which aims to uplift students of all backgrounds and identities in worldshaping STEM fields. 🌱 And we signed a lease to open up our first ever physical space, coming to San Francisco's Pier 70 neighborhood later this year! As always, our deepest gratitude goes to the funders, partners, creative collaborators, and members of our communities who share our commitment to building a more informed, equitable, and sustainable world. We can't wait to keep dreaming up new pathways to what's possible together. Check out the full report below and here: https://shorturl.at/oUY14

National Low Vision Awareness Month Each February, we take a moment to focus on a group often overlooked: those living with low vision. It's not blindness, but a spectrum of experiences where everyday tasks like reading, recognizing faces, or navigating become more challenging. While glasses or contacts may not be enough, this doesn't mean individuals with low vision can't lead fulfilling lives. This month, let's raise awareness and celebrate the resilience and adaptability of those navigating a world with blurred edges. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eMeTTFCX
