Empowering educators, transforming futures

About us

At City Teaching Alliance, we train teachers to be highly effective educators who empower every child through learning. Our teachers become career educators committed to equity and inclusivity, ensuring every student receives a great education. We believe access to a quality education gives young people the tools to become forces of change in their communities. In partnership with American University, City Teaching Alliance participants earn a Master's of Arts in Teaching. The curriculum is hands-on, practical, and specifically designed for urban schools. Our program emphasizes literacy and math skills, and includes coursework and dual certification in special education and a content area—ensuring our teachers can meet the needs of all children. Only City Teaching Alliance offers a highly-selective, rigorous program that includes three years of intensive coaching. During the first year in our program, known as the residency year, our participants work in the classroom alongside a host teacher getting over 1,500 hours of real classroom experience. Residents devote their time to developing their clinical practice during the day in their assigned school and developing their content and instructional knowledge through coursework in the master’s program at night. In year two, our residents become fellows and step into classrooms of their own. They continue their training as a teacher of record with continued coursework and coaching support. Three-quarters of our first-year teachers complete all four years of the program.

✨ Latinx Educators Shine - 2024 Spotlight ✨ Mieosha Hobbs, Instructional Coach in DC and Baltimore, and Alexandria Sweeney, Assistant Director of Fellow Experience in DC and Baltimore, BOTH spotlighted Melanie Marulanda (Cohort 2022, Baltimore). Mieosha Hobbs says, "Melanie has a special touch with her middle school babies! Not only do her students have a greater need than the general population, they are often working in multiple languages as well. Melanie seamlessly moves between languages and providing accommodations for her students, all while providing space for them to be themselves. Every visit, there is someone asking to talk with her at lunch and if she has a meeting while they are outside for recess, sadness fills their eyes. Melanie is beloved and it's for good reason!" Alexandria Sweeney says, "Melanie is wonderfully patient, kind, and encouraging with her middle school students. She has amazing relationship-building skills and shows her students that she believes in their success. Melanie is an important part of the Lakeland community and her students and families are lucky to have her." #CTAxHHM

✨ Latinx Educators Shine - 2024 Spotlight ✨ Mieosha Hobbs, Instructional Coach in DC & Baltimore, spotlighted Juan Garcia (Cohort 2022, Baltimore). Mieosha Hobbs says, "Juan's approach with his students comes from his own lived experiences and his students love and respect him for it. He is the safe space so many of them yearn for, especially at his current school site. Students are encouraged to be themselves in Juan's classroom. He makes himself available to them, uses personal anecdotes to get them invested in their own learning and introduces them to music many have never heard. Through humor, personal connections and an unending snack box available to all, Juan is a shining star for his babies in Baltimore. " #CTAxHHM
