Our President David 'DJ' Jochinke is calling for urgent action to address connectivity gaps raised in an independent report - and around kitchen tables across regional Australia. “Frustration over rural connectivity is at boiling point, and the four-fold increase in engagement in the 2024 review proves that.” Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gtc5PNQR
Drove from Colac to Coonabarabran to Gatton over 2 days. 50% ZERO signal or totally unusable 4G signal. This is on major highways so out of that corridor it will be worse. Coverage maps at best are untrustworthy
Another aspect to consider is the distance between base towers and the number of base towers available. Now Telstra are the owners and providers of base towers in Australia. The coverage base of each tower depends on several factors: the distance between each tower; the environment and terrain impacting coverage; the weather condition at the time; and the height of each base tower at the time of the build. Now the federal government provides only so much funding to Telstra each year towards the cost of each build with the remainder of the project build sort from private investment. SkyLink will help to reduce the black spot zones, however the implementation of more base towers is essential for the future and this will also reduce the pressure and impact black spot zones will have on rural communities.

3moIt's clear that ubiquitous terrestrial telecommunications is not economically viable in Australia, so we must look to new technologies and space. With technologies like Zetifi and Starlink, regional connectivity should be undergoing a significant improvement over the next 2 years. Starlink already covers all of Australia and will soon provide direct satellite to cell coverage. This connectivity coupled with farm wide mesh networks for distribution should solve the majority of issues in regional areas. More networks like Amazons Project Kupier will soon come online to provide competition and accelerate capability.
