Do astronauts have a fear of heights? 🤔
Most of us often think of astronauts as fearless pioneers, venturing into the unknown with nerves of steel.
But did you know that even these space explorers can have a fear of heights?
It's true!
In our latest video, we share the perspective of an astronaut on a spacewalk, with the vastness of Earth spread out below.
It's a moment that could make anyone's heart race, whether they're acrophobic or not.
Spacewalks are a critical part of maintaining the International Space Station and pushing the boundaries of our capabilities in space.
Astronauts train extensively to perform these walks, focusing on the tasks at hand to ensure their safety and the success of their missions.
Despite the intense preparation, the experience of floating in space, tethered only to the station, is profoundly different from anything on Earth.
It's not just about the physical challenge; it's a mental one as well.
Some astronauts have admitted to having a fear of heights, yet they find that this fear doesn't translate in the same way when they're in space.
For instance, NASA astronaut Drew Feustel, who has a mild fear of heights, reported that it doesn't affect him when he's 250 miles above the planet.
This might be because the usual visual cues that signal height and distance on Earth are absent in the microgravity environment of space.
In the end, it's not just about whether astronauts feel fear; it's about how they manage it and carry out their work with precision and calm.
Astronauts are selected for their exceptional adaptability qualities, showing that even those who have fears can overcome them to achieve incredible feats.
I'm grateful to the brave women and men who work above the Earth, as they help us understand more about space and ourselves.
You know, it's not just about conquering space; it's about conquering our own limitations as well.

As a global technology publication, our role is to inform and report on technological advancements and events, including this space mission. In a significant development for the space industry, the Moon Pioneers Mission in collaboration with NASA, is launching a mission that invites non-professional astronauts to experience the preparation and training akin to a lunar expedition. This mission represents a bold step forward in democratizing space exploration, offering unprecedented access to what has traditionally been the realm of a select few.
This initiative offers an extraordinary opportunity for individuals from diverse backgrounds to engage directly with space exploration, guided by the seasoned expertise of former NASA astronaut Gregory H. Johnson. The significance of this mission extends well beyond its immediate context. This endeavor is a precursor to a future where space travel may become part of our global culture, akin to air travel today, with safety and inclusivity as its cornerstones.
For the industry, each successful mission reinforces the viability of a future where space travel is a shared human endeavor. It's an investment in the collective skill set required for extraterrestrial environments, crucial for the long-term sustainability of off-world colonies. Moreover, it builds a foundation of public trust and enthusiasm for space exploration, which is essential as we look to the stars for our next home.
We stand by to observe and convey the results of this mission, successful or otherwise, with the understanding that each step forward is part of a larger journey towards humanity's aspirations in space.

What sorts of people become astronauts? 🧑🏽🚀
Three characteristics I discovered:
In a recent talk with Myles Harris, CEO of Space Health Research, he outlined three key traits that the organisation looks for in analogue astronauts, to participate in their missions on Earth.
Ultimately, space agencies look for:
🪐 People who are comfortable being uncomfortable, with experience of the outdoors
🪐 People who are passionate about space science and exploration, and understand that it has massive benefits for life on Earth as well
🪐 People who are fully willing to immerse themselves in the simulation and the important science done during each mission.
Ultimately, these are traits I’m also looking to develop, gathering as many experiences as I can to support future applications for the UK Space Agency and their missions!

The price you pay to boldly go where you have not gone before 🚀
My fellow Swede Marcus Wandt is the third Swedish astronaut ever to travel into space.
That’s a well earned reward for all that hard work and grit ever since he first realized: ”I want to go into space.”
Speaking of space travel – did you know that sending one kilo of matter into space costs about 1,500 dollars (cheapest option).
Most of that cash is burned just to escape Earth’s atmosphere.
Just like when you start something new, you use a lot of energy to gain momentum.
And then, when you escape your ’gravity pull’ it becomes easier.
The takeaway?
Don’t spend energy overthinking if or when to start – just use it to get going.

#TecnilaboPeople - Spacelab D1 mission marked several firsts in European human spaceflight. Together with NASA crew members, three ESA astronauts served as payload specialists (science astronauts) on the first spaceflight with a crew of eight.
Franco Severina, Senior Technical Sales Engineer at BioAir SpA, helped build the Clean Room where the Spacelab was assembled and today shares the significance of this mission:
"The Spacelab missions - one of which, the D1 on Challenger flight STS-61A, carried aboard the Spacelab built and assembled in 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐂 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐦 - became important to all of us for at least four good reasons:
🌌 They expanded the Shuttle's ability to conduct on-orbit science.
🤝 They provided a marvellous opportunity and example of a large international joint venture between the United States and Europe involving government, industry and science.
🧫 The European effort provided the world with a 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 several years before it would have been possible with funding from the US alone.
🚀 And finally, they provided Europe with the systems development, facilities and management experience necessary to move into the exclusive manned space flight arena.
This was another important achievement in the 55-year-long BioAir history in the application of 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝".

Google Reveals Why Its AI Model Is Named Gemini It doesn’t end there though, for Gemini signs are known to have dual personalities right? The naming scheme also has a two-fold inspiration, as a result. The other inspiration was drawn from NASA’s Gemini Project.
This was NASA’s early spaceflight program, which was to prepare astronauts for crewed flights to the moon with the Apollo back in the 1960s. It led to the Gemini 4 mission in 1965, making Ed White the first American to walk in space.
These are more than just feats. They are incredible feats of humankind and have shaped our space exploration over the years. Just as there wouldn’t be any Apollo without Gemini, Gemini AI wouldn’t have existed without Google DeepMind.
While human beings are already constantly trying to achieve new heights on the outside (Earth), the blog says that “Gemini’s era is just the beginning,” to solve problems on the inside. However, don’t think of ‘Gemini’ as the end of this naming scheme.
Being able to better understand and empathize with our peers, co-workers, neighbors, and strangers; position us to better discern what is actually important.
The "Overview Effect" is a in awareness reported by some astronauts during spaceflight, often while viewing the Earth from space.
It is best decribed as a new found sense that the earth and everyone and everything on it is small compared to the vastness of space.
This shift in perspective leads to a greater concern for the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants.
It has led to a significant impact on some individuals' attitudes and actions towards what is important on earth; politically, economically, and environmentally.
The overview effect not only effects the perspective of astronauts. In our daily lives if we can rise above the urgency of the moment, we are able to gain a greater appreciation for the people, perceptions, and world around us.
