India Unveils Astronauts for Gaganyaan Mission, Aiming for Space Leadership Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the four astronauts chosen for Gaganyaan, India's first human spaceflight mission. 🛰️ Extending the lives of satellites in geostationary orbit and disposing of end-of-life satellites and space debris in low-Earth orbit are reaching the commercial phase with three news items this week: two from the US and one from France. With SpaceX set to build the deorbit vehicle for International Space Station, this is the big one. It will be interesting to see how this segment will evolve. Mission success will guarantee a significant advance for the first one. It will probably become a winner-takes-all scenario, with the lion's share of the market going to the leader.

🚀 Boeing’s Starliner Faces Delays in First Crewed Test Flight 🚀 The highly anticipated inaugural crewed test flight of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, with seasoned astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore aboard, has hit a few unexpected snags. Launched on June 5, the mission was initially planned for a 10-day flight. However, during a June 6 docking with the International Space Station (ISS), Starliner encountered helium leaks and thruster issues. Despite these challenges, the spacecraft remains stable and ready for emergency departure from the ISS. To pinpoint the root cause, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Boeing will conduct a two-week test campaign starting July 2 at the White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico. As of now, a specific landing date for Starliner remains uncertain. 🔍 What Went Wrong? 🔍 During docking, a tiny helium leak and misbehaving thrusters affected Starliner’s approach to the @ISS. While most thrusters have recovered, one will be excluded during landing due to performance concerns. The delay is part of a series of setbacks for Starliner, which has faced challenges since its flawed initial uncrewed flight test in 2019. He previously led the historic Inspiration4 mission in 2021, the first all-civilian spaceflight1. This month, Isaacman is set to make history again by commanding the Polaris Dawn mission, which includes the first private industry spacewalk1. The Polaris Dawn Mission: Scheduled to launch on August 26, 2024, the Polaris Dawn mission will be carried out using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft2. The mission is part of the Polaris Program, a series of three flights purchased by Isaacman from SpaceX to advance human spaceflight. The Crew: Joining Isaacman on this groundbreaking mission are Scott Poteet, a longtime colleague, and SpaceX employees Anna Menon and Sarah Gillis1. Each member brings unique expertise, with Menon serving as the flight’s medical officer and Gillis as the mission specialist. The Spacewalk: The highlight of the Polaris Dawn mission is the planned spacewalk, or extravehicular activity (EVA), which will be the first of its kind conducted by a private venture1.
