LNG Terminal Explosion In 9 Jun 2022, Freeport LNG, operator of one of the largest US export plants producing liquefied natural gas (LNG), shut for at least three weeks after an explosion. 🔹 What Went Wrong? After an inspection of a Pressure Safety Valve (PSV) it remained blocked-in: separating an LNG pipeline from the PSV. During pressure build-up, the LNG pipeline started to leak creating a methane cloud that exploded. 🔶 Recommendations 1-) A valve between a PSV and the equipment that needs pressure protection requires special attention. 2-) An isolation checklist helps to assure all valves are managed well, and end-up in the right position after maintenance. 3-) PSV maintenance requires individual permit to work. 4-) Pre Start-up Safety Review, after maintenance work, can validate the position of critical valves. 5-) Critical valves that must be open during production, can be locked with a car-seal or with a key-lock system that shows a green or red key in the control room. Experienced and knowledgeable employees are a treasure for hazardous process jobs. Gas leakages were dictated on different manifold joints valve of the 12tubes skid that was about to lineup for refill. When a skid is being returned back from the customer’s station, the skid should be lined up for supervision to ascertain the conditions of the skid,to ascertain if the skid is fit to be refilled or if there are corrective maintenance measures to be carried out on the skid before it will be certified fit for loading. Some of the things to check are; the gas leaks from the manifold valves,the drain lines,the condition of the male coupler. This should be done by,opening each valve and place gas detector on each valve joint. Some reasons for gas leaks can be slacked joints,faulty O’ring. Also, the tires should be properly checked before the skid should be certified fit for loading. After an uneventful start to the coke drum filling process, where all operational parameters were good, an upset caused cold residue to be fed to the same drum for eight hours. The events that caused this situation, and the unique way the unconverted residue was handled by the engineering and operations teams, will be reviewed. The approach to dealing with the tarry drum scenario did not involve the typical drum steam heating for an extended period. Instead, a light oil was mixed to the unconverted residue, and the drum oil content was overflowed to blowdown system. Safe operation of storage tanks in the Oil and Gas and Energy Industry is extremely important. Key factors to be considered for safe operation of liquid storage tanks are to ensure that: 1) NO VAPOR shall enter a tank with an internal floating roof (or any atmospheric tank) during any normal operation. 2) True Vapor Pressure (TVP) shall be lower than 76 kPa. This should be estimated by using a process simulator for the given composition of the fluid and temperature. If not possible, it could be estimated by using temperature and RVP. 3) Vents located at the top of the tank should have sufficient capacity for all relevant scenarios mentioned in API2000.

SPM-3040 Advanced GOSP with Gas Dehydration The Advanced Gas-Oil Separation Process includes three crude oil production wells, High and Low Pressure Production Manifolds, a Test Manifold, a Test Separator, and two parallel gas-oil-water separation trains. Each separation train consists of three 3-phase separators operating at successively lower pressures to separate the crude oil into oil, gas and water streams. Gas released from the 2nd and 3rd Stage separators is compressed and combined with gas from the 1st Stage Separator and sent to treating. Water from each separator is collected and sent to water treating for disposal. Gas saturated with water enters near the bottom of the Contactor and flows upwards through the internal trays. Lean TEG from the Regeneration Section is cooled by exchanging heat with the dry gas from the Contactor and enters the Contactor near the top and flows down through the Contactor internals, making contact with the up-flowing gas stream.

Part 3, LNG. Permit me with much humilty to describe the APCI MR (mixed refrigerant) process as shown in lower schematic. 7) Process gas stream enters inlet scrubber for primary separation at 7-8 MPa ( 1000 - 1147 psia), and 25-35 deg. C ( 77- 95 F. ) all production sand MUST be removed prior to inlet. 8) removal of damaging components by an amine , MDEA, unit : CO2 and H2S to nil levels. The max OSHA levels for Hg of .05 mg/N cu. m. , and nil mercaptans are achieved. This unit is shown downstream of inlet scrubber. In some installations , the Hg removeal unit is a downstream solid bed packed with a sulphur bed trapping unit which produces cinnabar. 9) Next a Propane chiller cools inlet gas to 15 - 20 deg C ( 59 - 68 F ). 10) a 4X mole sieve dehydrator MUST dehydrate gas to a water dew point of -162 C ( - 260 F). This gas MUST be cooled to these temperatures. 11) A second protective solid bed is at times applied for Hg removal to 0.01 micgm/Nmcu. Hg is devastating to aluminum plate and fin, or coiled Al tubing carrying process gas to CHEX. The HGAL amalgum will create a problem to the coiled HEX tubes , known as LME. LIQUID METALIC EMBRITTLMENT. The stress vs. strain relationship of the coils will be damaged. 12) not shown is equipment to remove most C4’s , and ALL C5 +, sending stream to fractionation. 13) the APCI MR process utilizes a mixed refrigerant with a MW to provide a liquid / vapor mass after 4 stages of C3 refrigeration to approximately - 35 , - 38 C and 400-700 kPa. The MR FLUIDS OPERATE AT P/T Conditions lower in pressure than the process gas at 5-7 MPa. The equilibrium mass/liquid is directed to an upstream cold separator. This process is essential in order to provide a cryogenic liquid to the WARM BOX approx. ( lower 1/3 of MCHEX) , and cryogenic vapor to the COLD BOX (upper 2/3 of MCHEX). Both phases coincide and HEX in entry at cold box. The MR cold box liquid is JT’d to tenperatures approaching -40 C. The cold bundle MR vapor is also JT’d to reach a final expansion temperature in range of -170 C. 14)The LNG will reach a bubble point at these conditions of P, T. Now an interesting point in PHASE EQUILIBRIUM THERMODYNAMICS. Although LNG liquid phase is discharged at -162 C , and approx. 7000 kPa, the expansion of the LNG to 1 bar , ( 101 kPa , 14.7 psia) WILL NOT CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE OR ENTHALPY. This is isothermal , isenthalpic process where the Joule Thompson coefficient : (dT/dP) at constant enthalpy , H, is + for cooling , - for heating . The JT in this final process is nearly 0. So final thermodynamic step is ISOTHERMAL/ISENTHALPIC. Now , as shown in schematic LNG is stored at close to atmospheric temperature and a slight pressure above 1 bar. Some evaporative losses are inevitable. Please refer to temperature profiles of MRl warm box liquid and MRv cold box vapor. Have not seen this anywhere. Please advise if I’m mistaken.
