Due to exceptionally cold temperatures in the region, more than 1.4mn bpd of the US Gulf Coast’s refining capacity remained offline as of January 23. A combination of extreme cold and planned work in the region led to a sudden surge in refinery outages, which initially peaked at 1.6mn bpd of offline CDU capacity on January 16. While temps in the region have since returned to seasonal norms, the amount of CDU capacity shut in PADD 3 has remained stubbornly high for this early in the year. Our latest MP Outage In March, we completed our scheduled MP Outage at Grain LNG. Usually held in February, this year's timing in March allowed us to thoroughly prepare and carry out a significant amount of work effectively. 🛠️ Key Achievements: ↳ Meter upgrade: We replaced an old meter with a new one from a different manufacturer, which is important for one of our key metering streams. ↳ Safety tests: We conducted ten Safety Integrity Level (SIL) tests and made necessary adjustments, including a manual reset following an e-stop alarm. ↳ Valve maintenance and inspections: We performed essential maintenance on several valves and inspected four Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR) relief valves. Grain LNG's team effort: The smooth running of this outage highlighted the excellent teamwork across our maintenance and operations teams. Brian Prior remarked, "This was one of the smoothest MP outages we've had, thanks to early planning and great teamwork." Stuart Bengall echoed this: "Efficient preparation and timely permit submissions made a big difference, ensuring all tasks were completed quickly and safely." Future plans: The lessons learned from this outage are invaluable and will help make future outages even more effective. Sulfur Recovery Solutions An imbalance of combustion air in sulfur recovery units could result in too much hydrogen sulfide or sulfur dioxide in the tail gas and possibly cause a shutdown of the entire LNG facility—and corrosion is an ongoing challenge. What is a Gas Lift Curve? ➡ In short, it shows our expected oil rate at all gas lift injection rates! 😢 In the past, we had to manually sensitize the new BHP for one specific gas lift rate, then see where that rate lands along our IPR curve. Repeat the process for a different gas lift rate. It was brutal! ⭐ Now, we can instantly see our expected oil rate at any gas lift rate! Even evaluate lower casing pressures to predict opening a deeper gas lift valve. The Texas City Refinery: An explosion occurred on March 23, 2005, when a vapour cloud of natural gas and petroleum ignited and violently exploded at the BP Texas City refinery in Texas City. Killing 15 workers, injuring 180 others and severely damaging the refinery. The explosions occurred when a distillation tower flooded with hydrocarbons and was overpressurized, causing a geyser-like release from the vent stack.
