Hi everyone! I hope you’re all having a great summer! I wanted to share some updates on what I’ve been up to these past few months. This summer, I had the privilege of participating in two exciting internships: Policy Research Assistant at Ohio University under Dr. Kaufman: I had the opportunity to research legislative policies following the Lucasville uprising in Ohio, focusing on the crisis of legitimacy and the impact of language in legislative advocacy. My work delved into the negative effects of risk scoring on individuals from minority and lower socioeconomic communities. I’m proud to share that my contributions will be formally recognized in Dr. Kaufman’s final research. Marketing and Business Strategist at Mablab: At Mablab, I developed social media content and strategized ways to promote new programs. I enjoyed making scientific language—especially about dangerous lacing agents—more accessible to broader audiences. This role allowed me to bridge the gap between complex scientific concepts and everyday understanding. The Deal with Danalize Balancing two internships meant I had to step back a bit from my Ed-Tech startup, Danalize, which hopes to enhance financial and loan literacy for low-income communities and expand educational opportunities for low-income students. Despite this, my passion for advocating for educational equity hasn’t changed. I’m currently working on a pilot mentorship program and a translation initiative to make education accessible on a larger scale. Rest and Reflection I made sure to take some time to rest and spend quality time with loved ones this summer. This downtime gave me a chance to reflect on my academic journey, and I’m so excited to return to campus feeling refreshed and ready to study what I’m passionate about! RISING TALENT ALERT! #GovernmentAffairs and #ThinkTank pals in the DMV: I'm pleased to introduce a recent Clemson grad interested in making his way to D.C. to return to policy analysis/research work following some policy research internships (and, meanwhile, set his course for policy strategy/dot-connector roles -- which you know is close to my heart). Meet Jackson Hern, an honors economics and political science BA with excellent analytical research, writing, and communication skills. His prior experience and study has centered on education, workforce development, and labor force policy.

Why don't more universities have adjust professor programs? Or part time programs? Some of the most valuable information I learned in higher education was from educators who worked in the business world or consulted in addition to their research. It seems like there is a huge opportunity for universities to have swaths of potential adjunct professors ready to teach on any topic. Not whole semesters but maybe a couple of weeks at a time. The lawyer I use to this day was an adjunct professor during my undergrad years. The presence of adjunct professors can also benefit students by providing them with valuable networking opportunities. Many adjunct professors continue to work in the industry alongside their teaching responsibilities, allowing students to connect with professionals who are actively involved in the field. These connections can lead to internships, job opportunities, and mentorship, further enhancing the students' educational experience and increasing their chances of success in their careers. Back in college, my whole world crashed when my dream internship got cancelled at the last minute. Imagine landing your dream internship or externship, only to have it vanish before it even begins -- because the company didn't have the time or resource to support you any longer. 🕰️💔😢 That happened two decades ago during my undergrad experience at MIT, a pivotal moment that highlighted a glaring issue in our approach to professional development. As a college student, it is easy to think because you are still learning you might not be equipped to solve problems in the small business communtiy. However, small businesses in our communities desperately need young perspectives that can bring energy and enthusiasm to learn and solve problems in the D.C. area. Rarely have I had more fun than in the last 10 weeks with this year's New Jersey State Policy Lab Summer Internship 2024 cohort. What a joy it has been to work with every single person involved in this program. These young scholars knocked it out of the park with their final presentations and I can't wait for you all to see their work on the New Jersey State Policy Lab website! Earlier this week, the UK Government announced new changes to the immigration policy. Among the changes is an increase in the minimum salary to obtain a Skilled Worker Visa from £26,000 to £38,000 per year. The Home Secretary also mentioned that the government will reconsider the Graduate Route visa for international students, a visa loved by many foreign students to start a career in the UK without employer sponsorship. Whether we like it or not, international students are part of a migrant community and are also very vulnerable to immigration policy dynamics. The recent dynamic might as well impact the inflow of international students in the future. Previously, the government had a target to host 600,000 international students by 2035, which the number has been met in the last couple of years. It depicts that despite the expensive tuition fees for international students, UK higher education is still a preferable option for hundreds of thousands of international students every year.
