🏙 Neighbourhoods are the building blocks of our communities, yet in Belfast, severed connections between them pose significant challenges. Until recent times, the national planning system has avoided issues related to divided neighbourhoods and ‘peace walls’. It is only now there is acknowledgment on the central role of planning in relation to community engagement and creative solutions to create more shared spaces as a form of spatial good relations. Today the UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) Urban Lab team, will be taking part in a conference organized by Queen's University Belfast, introducing the My Neighbourhood tool- a new approach to bridging these divides through thoughtful urban planning and community engagement. With insights from local stakeholders and experts, the conference will explore how to create spaces that encourage cross-community relations and improve the quality of life for residents. This is a unique opportunity to reflect on the processes and planning policies needed to create more inclusive and connected spaces. 🔗 Link to contribute and join the conversation : https://lnkd.in/es_FYTht Pinar Caglin | Yassine Moustanjidi| Maia Smillie | Herman Pienaar | Anastasia Ignatova #urbanlab #myneighbourhood #Neighbourhoodregeneration #urbanplanning #urbanregenration #communityengagement

Here's an interesting article around 'YIMBYism' and a new book on the topic from Max Holleran. While there are a variety of views around the pathway towards greater housing diversity and housing choice, there is a lot we can reflect on from the YIMBY approach, including the importance of good planning, good development, and the importance of community engagement and working together. We also have a Queensland based YIMBY movement (YIMBY Qld): https://bit.ly/3vBqWOZ https://bit.ly/3U5EyML #homematters #yimby #housingsolutions

Part 1: 2. From Shadows to Sunshine Turning the Tide The relentless efforts of Sunnyside United begin to sway public opinion, leading to increased scrutiny of Luxe Realty’s practices. Under pressure, city officials agree to reevaluate the redevelopment plans and open discussions about affordable housing and the preservation of community spaces. A New Vision In a dramatic turn of events, the CEO of Luxe Realty, influenced by the rising public backlash and inspired by the unity and passion of the Sunnyside community, agrees to meet with Sunnyside United. Through a series of negotiations, a new plan is forged: one that includes affordable housing units, spaces for existing small businesses, and the creation of a community fund to support local initiatives. The Celebration The story culminates in a vibrant street festival in Sunnyside, symbolizing the community’s victory and resilience. Maria and the members of Sunnyside United are celebrated as heroes, having shown that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, collective action and community spirit can prevail. Reflection “From Shadows to Sunshine” is a testament to the power of community action and solidarity in protecting the social fabric of neighborhoods facing the threat of gentrification. It serves as an inspiring reminder that when communities unite for a common cause, they can illuminate paths to equitable and inclusive development.

Easy like Sunday morning Thanks to Lewis for sharing this : I haven’t read any of the detail yet but perhaps Town could be seen as a pilot scheme by all those in the Third Sector who post on Linked In about Rough Sleeping & Homelessness inc Young Homelessness and analyse whether Town provides the “ community” that they / you represent with options and then feed back to the design architects early doors. Clearly an enormous amount of work has gone into this and 2 points spring to mind :- (A) if New New Labour is to meet its “1.5 m over 5 “ target there needs to be 30 schemes like this per annum from & 2025 to come on stream in 2028 & then annually assuming 10000 homes per scheme ( B) I assume the affordable proportion means affordable to buy and to rent but what proportion of social housing is included ie community based homes probably using modular construction to rent ( and perhaps equity share?) In building a community that community has to represent a cross section of those from all walks of life including those that Anthony from Gyr is seeking to help…. Otherwise it becomes a modern example of a rich man ( and even those like Sir Keir take handouts) in his castle and the poor man ( woman child etc) at their gate. I will share the East Midlands Freeport ( hopefully Greenport) graphic which shows from the 14 UK Freeports point of view how there could be communities created through levelling up nationwide for :- Working & Living Moving ( logistics) Making ( manufacturing) If the bright sparks at Town could incorporate their vision into the Free Green Ports vision then perhaps we could really make inroads into the UK’s homelessness challenge … not just in the wealthier parts of the UK either A good start though.

“Let’s hope it’s a pop song to make people think”, Ralph McTell, Streets of London. Around the world, over 1.6 billion people are #homeless or living in inadequate #housing. Closer to home in #Australia, over 116,000 people are homeless every night. Habitat for Humanity International #Victoria recognises a severe lack of access to appropriate and affordable housing in Australia (and mental health support) and particularly in Victoria, making it incredibly difficult for low income families to find decent, secure accommodation. Victoria’s housing crisis snapshot: -Melbourne is the 4th least affordable major housing market in the world -The median price for a dwelling in Greater Melbourne has risen to $665,000 -It will take a medium income family 9.6 years to save a 20% deposit to buy a home -Only 0.9% of private rental properties in Greater Melbourne are affordable for households receiving income support payments (from Centrelink)
