Last Friday (July 19), Japan's Ministry of the Environment published the first edition of the Harmonized Guidelines for Marine Litter Monitoring Using Remote Sensing Technology. Developed with insights from both domestic and international experts, these guidelines aim to enhance the comprehensiveness and efficiency of marine litter surveys and monitoring. Purpose: Improve marine litter monitoring using remote sensing technology, including drones. Content: - Basic preparations for surveys - Selection of equipment based on purpose - Technological maturity, challenges, and future prospects - Procedures and points for conducting surveys (including drone-based monitoring) Goals: - Collect extensive survey and monitoring data - Promote effective measures against plastic pollution Background: With increasing global interest in addressing marine litter, particularly plastics, these guidelines support the development of scientific knowledge crucial for planning and evaluating anti-pollution measures. They are part of ongoing efforts to conclude a legally binding international treaty to end plastic pollution.
