The USS Kingsville, one of the last Independence-class littoral combat ships, has successfully passed its sea trials and is set to be homeported in San Diego. Measuring 422 feet and featuring an aluminum-hull trimaran design, it's specifically built for operations in shallow, near-shore waters, with a primary focus on mine identification and neutralization, as well as maritime security. The Indy-class LCS is known for its high speed, capable of reaching nearly 50 mph under ideal sea conditions, making it one of the fastest vessels in the Navy. Currently, San Diego Bay is home to 16 LCS ships, although two of them may be decommissioned in the near future. When I last read about Triton, it had flight endurance of up to 24 hours. If the #royalnavy can improve the reliability of the #QueemElizabethClass aircraft carriers, systems like Triton will revolutionise #CarrierEnabledPowerProjection. Could see an increase in the number of RN engineers required, though. Of course, all these Uncrewed systems (Air, Surface & Sub-surface) will be systems engineered on an open architecture…!!??

The US Navy has neglected the crucial capability of amphibious aircraft, which played a key role in enabling fleet operations and logistic sustainment during World War II. Amphibious aircraft like the PBY Catalina were vital "workhorse connectors" that performed crucial functions like long-range reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, and logistics support. They allowed the fleet to maintain battlespace awareness and protect supply lines. The historical examples of Ensign Jack Reid's reconnaissance mission that helped initiate the Battle of Midway, and Lt. Cmdr Adrian Marks' daring rescue of USS Indianapolis survivors, demonstrate the immense value of amphibious aircraft. Yet the U.S. has since lost interest in this capability. In the face of potential future conflicts in the Pacific, the U.S. Navy would benefit from reviving its amphibious aircraft capabilities to support distributed maritime operations and logistics. The Office of the Chief of Naval Operations Lisa Franchetti has released her 2024 Navigation Plan for the US Navy. Direct and uncompromising, it doesn’t get much more frank than this: >> ‘The Navigation Plan drives towards two strategic ends: readiness for the possibility of war with the People’s Republic of China by 2027 and enhancing the Navy’s long-term advantage. We will work towards these ends through two mutually reinforcing ways: implementing Project 33 and expanding the Navy’s contribution to the Joint warfighting ecosystem.’ So what? - never has there been a more important time to foster co-working and co-sustainment across the allied and partner industrial base - think ‘Beyond AUKUS’ - the small, the fast, the cheap and the many count (maritime autonomy at scale) - the time to work out how to deliver in-theatre maintenance and upgrade (expeditionary maintenance) is now, not tomorrow
