A topic that I keep hearing from clients is how to increase learning adoption and get employees more engaged in training and development opportunities. You can offer all the training opportunities in the world, but if employees don’t see the "what’s in it for me" or if the environment isn’t right—with too much focus on execution—then they won’t take advantage of what’s out there. It’s not always a matter of pulling just one lever—there’s often a combination of factors at play. That’s what building a learning culture is really about. At first, it can sound a bit abstract or conceptual, but in this upcoming webinar, I’ll break down the different elements of a learning culture—things like building the right infrastructure, measuring clear outcomes, fostering an environment that encourages risk-taking and learning from failure, and developing learning agility to meet employees where they are. As a leader, how many One-on-Ones do you have with your team members? Once a year? Twice? Every quarter? Every month? Every other week? When I started off my career, I had one One-on-One per year. It's purpose: performance management and the annual rating that would determine some sort of bonus. Of course, I did see my manager often during the week - in the hallway, in a team meeting, for a project conversation. Quite understandably, the annual One-on-One with them was scary, and it preoccupied my mind long before the actual meeting. Then, when joining HBOS (soon after to be merged with Lloyds TSB to form Lloyds Banking Group) Trina Case (Kellaway) was my boss. With her, One-on-Ones became a regular conversation in my calendar. They did not have anything scary or daunting. We talked about us - and, most of the times, about me as her team member: the things that brought me joy; the struggles I had; the projects I worked on. I realized two things: 🌱 I opened up much more sharing feelings, worries and dreams. 🌱 I was more motivated because I knew I was seen and heard. Trina listened to me, and offered alternative views, ideas and recommendations. When in sessions or trainings with leaders today, I always stress the importance of having regular One-on-Ones with their team members. Because I know the difference. After 15 years of various industries, including Hospitality, Banking, Retail, and Telecommunication, transitioning to teaching is a good way to validate experience especially engaging with learners and facilitating practical application of knowledge and skills. Recently, students completed a module on Hospitality Supervision and Training Skills. They explored crucial topics like supervisor roles, time management, communication, leadership, customer service, team-working, conflict resolution, and more. Additionally, they gained hands-on experience in real-life event management, leadership, and budgeting. In today's challenging world, it's essential to groom future leaders with critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Teaching students to apply knowledge and skills is a high-impact way to foster these capabilities across various disciplines.
