Empowering leaders to make a positive impact on workplace culture and wider society. Founder | Consultant | NED | Advisor | Speaker
After 20 months of deliberation, nine of Bristol's powerful institutions have signed the legally binding agreement to formalise the OurCity2030 Board. But what does that mean? It means intentional collaboration along with dedicated resource and intelligence from - Business West, Bristol City Council, Cabot Learning Federation, Arup, Black South West Network, Bristol & Bath Regional Capital, University of Bristol, University of the West of England and Babbasa - to help broker 1000s of employment opportunities from industries; help engage 1000's of marginalised young people with access issues; and help evaluate the impact of this innovative systems change intervention for the benefit of practice and policy. The aim is simple - to advance 2030 marginalised young people into career-oriented roles by 2030. To close the inequality gap and create a lasting difference in Bristol, and in a way that can be replicated in other locations. Its about helping to unlock the potential of 1000's of young people trapped in a cycle of generational poverty - so they can break out and live dignified lives too. A momentous occasion which wouldnt have been possible without the support of Marvin Rees OBE, John McWilliams, Tracey John, Maria Vitale, Sado Jirde, Phil Smith, Matt Griffith, Jane Taylor, Ed Rowberry, Kath Cooper, Stephen Dale, Lizzie Lyons, Austin Smith, Sophie Camburn, Nick Sturge MBE, Lucy McKerron and the Babbasa board and supporters. I look forward to working with all, including other social mobility agencies in the Southwest, to make it a reality.

🌍 Connecting Cities and Regions for Sustainable Mobility 🌍 Last week, our office participated in the first-ever joint meeting of the POLIS Network Small and Medium-Sized Cities (SMC) Platform and the Regions Working Group. This event was co-hosted by the City of Vic and the Generalitat de Catalunya. This important event brought together cities and regions from across Europe to discuss innovative solutions for sustainable urban mobility. Some key highlights: 💭 Food for thought: various insightful presentations were held on innovative mobility approaches, including discussions on the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), along with other local and EU mobility initiatives. 🚶♀️ An inspiring site visit in Vic, where participants observed the city's well-designed pedestrian network, which promotes walking as a key mode of transportation for daily activities and leisure. 🌐 A panel debate where Pieter Faber, chair of the SMC Platform, emphasized the critical role of small and medium-sized cities as urban nodes within the new TEN-T regulation, and the need for an ambitious multi-annual financial framework in the next funding period. This meeting showcased the power of cooperation between #cities and #regions, as we work together to address common challenges and foster innovation in sustainable mobility 💡 #POLISNetwork #SMC #CitiesNorthernNetherlands #VicSlowCity #MobilityInnovation #Governance #TEN_T #UrbanNodes #SustainableMobility #UrbanDevelopment

🔥📘 HOT OFF THE PRESS! 📘🔥 "A Mobility Justice Framework to Prioritize Areas for Mobility Interventions" published in Elsevier's Research in Transportation Business and Management. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/d599AbZG In this paper, we propose a framework that combines distributive and recognition justice principles to identify and address mobility inequalities, particularly focusing on disadvantaged socio-economic groups. By applying this framework to Munich, we highlight critical areas where transport infrastructure improvements can make a significant impact on those most in need. This paper focused specifically on older people to showcase the applicability of the framework and methodology. A better overview of other disadvantaged socio-economic groups in Munich can be found here: Mobility Injustice Atlas ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eWFjZD_c Mobility Injustice Tool ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dazwbd6e Why is this relevant for decision-making? - Understanding, visualizing, and quantifying how resources are allocated and the fairness of distributions and access is significant for supporting decision-makers in incentivizing development and ensuring that future changes are widely beneficial and fair. - It can mitigate the limitations that governmental bodies have to recognize and understand the diverse needs, experiences, and habits of all population groups, especially the most disadvantaged ones. - Acknowledging the needs, experiences, and habits of all groups related to certain mobility infrastructures and services, i.e. cycling, can play a vital role in promoting and encouraging the adoption of sustainable transportation modes. This holds significant importance in mitigating urban climate change impacts, a point which is very high in city planning agendas worldwide. Authors: Sindi Haxhija, David Duran Rodas, María Teresa Baquero Larriva, Gebhard Wulfhorst. This study was conducted as part of the MCube - Munich Cluster for the future of Mobility in Metropolitan Regions.

🚈 🚲 🚶♀️ 🚌 Nudging Sustainable Transport Choices: Applying Behavioural Science in Mobility ✍ Brian Marrinan For decades, transport decision-makers have predominantly focused on technological advances and diversifying urban transport services to meet growing mobility needs. The common assumption has been that passengers make rational decisions based on travel time and cost. This approach overlooks the complexity of human behaviour. People are not purely rational actors; they are creatures of habit, emotionally driven, influenced by their environment, and guided by social norms and their own self-image. The Beyond the Urban URBACT network recently held a webinar entitled “Moving People: Using Science to Nudge Behaviours in Transport and Mobility” that introduced this topic to the partners, in advance of a deeper dive into the topic at the planned TNM in Hradec Králové early next year. The attendees learned that to create truly sustainable urban and rural mobility systems, we must look beyond the traditional lens and embrace the insights provided by behavioural science to nudge people towards more sustainable transport choices. A 10-Year Perspective on City Challenges and Opportunities “Since we started Urban Future as new kids on the block 10 years ago… cities have become much more active in the public domain and the political scene (and now) we have very active and powerful city networks that are pushing national governments with very vocal and open mayors,” observed Urban Future CEO Gerald Babel-Sutter at today’s media event. An event which kicked off the 2024 Urban Future Global Conference in Rotterdam. “I think the second real change we’ve seen in the past years is the degree of involvement of citizens in what’s happening in their cities. Ten years ago public participation was ok and some cities were farther ahead like the Netherlands and Nordic countries… but in most countries it was just starting. But now participation and co-creation are much more prominent in the big transformations that are taking place. And that’s something that’s really cool to observe.” “The third thing that unfortunately is not so cool is that whenever I talk to leaders now, they tell me well… we don’t have on challenge in the city… we have dozens of challenges… that have been on the horizon for a long time and nobody did anything about it. But now, we have everything coming together. You have housing, inequality, education, health, mobility transformation… climate change and adaptation… it’s all happening. So now one of the biggest challenges now is having the right people in place (to help cope with these challenges).” #Urbanfuture #urbanrenewal #sustainablecities #ufgc #urbanism #citybuilding #LiorSteinberg #ChrisBruntlett #GeraldBabelSutter #LisaMarieGatterbauer #JornWemmenhove #AndreasLindinger #HeinrichStrobenreuther #MarkNieuwenhuijsen Gerald Babel-Sutter addressing the media at the start of the 2024 Urban Future conference.
