Emotional abuse, unlike physical mistreatment, inflicts wounds that are not visible on the outside. However, this does not diminish their intensity. Emotional abuse is not an isolated incident or behavior, and many victims find it difficult to recognize. Oftentimes, the perpetrator of emotional abuse may be unaware of their abusive actions. Instead, they may harbor feelings of insecurity regarding their partner's love, leading them to accuse their partner of infidelity, blame them for their own unhappiness, or constantly monitor their voice and text messages. These accusations, blame, and constant surveillance all constitute forms of emotional abuse. Do any of these behaviors resonate with your relationship? Examples include constant criticism or attempts to manipulate and control, shaming and blaming through hostile sarcasm or direct verbal attacks, the use of belittling language, verbal abuse such as name-calling, withholding affection as a form of punishment, punishment and threats of punishment, refusal to acknowledge one's own role in the relationship dynamic, mind games like gaslighting when it comes to accepting personal responsibility for one's own happiness, refusal to communicate, and isolating the partner from supportive friends and family. Use your power!
When we've been manipulated and emotionally abused, it can be hard to take accountability for our reactions. We often begin to blame the abuser for everything and fail to recognize our own responses. It's our responsibility to manage our thoughts and feelings and protect them from those who have hurt us. This can be hard to accept, especially when the abuse has been very hurtful and deep, but understanding this is necessary for healing. There is a balance between how much someone can hurt us and how much we allow them to continue to hurt us.

What constitutes emotional abuse? Emotional or psychological abuse can be challenging to articulate and often goes unnoticed. This type of abuse typically occurs in private and manifests in subtle, passive-aggressive, covert, or even plausible deniable behaviors. Examples include verbal aggression, insults, threats, intimidation, coercion, manipulation, or isolation, all of which undermine the target's sense of safety (both physical and emotional), self-esteem, and perception of reality. Even though these behaviours are classic signs of emotional abuse, most individuals are unlikely to recognize themselves as victims. They may struggle to acknowledge the severity and impact of the abuse they've endured. Recognizing the behaviours, understanding one's feelings, and acknowledging the impact of unhealthy relationships are crucial steps toward cultivating a healthier and happier self, regardless of the outcome of the relationship. Furthermore, recipients of abuse often blame themselves for not doing enough, even when they are overwhelmed by the abuse they are subjected to.
