Years ago, Mick saw a video featuring domestic abuse survivors. One of the women was Paula*, a fellow trainer at NCDV and his long-time friend. Paula's story ignited a change in Mick. He joined NCDV to help others facing abuse. Read Mick’s full story, here: https://lnkd.in/eGVtSwjh #DomesticAbuseAwareness

Physical violence is not the defining characteristic of abuse. Outsiders looking in recognize abuse by the obvious bruises and wounds depicted in media like tv and movies, but there is a reason psychological thrillers are scarier than horror movies: The intensity of your mind being assaulted is uncontrollable and not easily described. And, the professionals who interact with victim survivors - from advocates to law enforcement and judges - can inadvertently re-traumatize the very people they aim to support because of their lack of awareness about the abuse that takes place beyond the physical. It is helpful to define abuse. Merriam-Webster defines abuse as: “to use or treat so as to injure or damage.” While this can be physical, other forms of abuse include: ➡ Family Court ➡ Coercive Control ➡ Reproductive Coercion ➡ Harassment & Stalking ➡ Tech-Facilitated Coercive Control When victim advocates come in contact with people that are unaware of the effects and the signs and symptoms of these non-physical types of abuse, the helpers may find themselves impatient with side effects displaying as irresponsibility, frustrated with the inattention to detail, and unintentionally lacking compassion for repeat mistakes. Instead, having knowledge about the effects and how they vary can increase compassion and make professionals and helpers more intentional and impactful. Which, admittedly, is no easy feat when time and energy is scarce and the helpers are stretched so thin. But the outcome of dismissing victim survivors’ requests and doing things the way things have always been done has detrimental and long-term impact - the obvious being letting abusers continue the cycle of abuse. With 57.6 million women in the US reporting they’ve experienced coercive control and entrapment, it is time we took this far more seriously. Helpers, advocates, and professionals are undoubtedly having interactions that are harmful when they set out to be helpful. If your organization is ready to learn how they can be better advocates for the millions affected by the various types of abuse, email HopeTeam@unr.edu or learn more at: https://lnkd.in/dRgzu5j7

Lighthouse delivers training to businesses around the Impact of Domestic Abuse in the Workplace. Why should you attend? We asked previous delegates "What was the most important thing you learnt" Their responses were: - Understanding the correlation of how domestic abuse impacts in work places. - How to access support. - How to support a team member if they were a victim of DA. - Too much to mention. It was a very difficult subject to listen and hear about. Deb had such a lovely way about her that it was quite factual but delivered with care, passion and understanding. ☂ What is our survivor centred approach? When we talk about bullying or harassment at work, we speak about "survivors" rather than "victims". The term Survivor is used to define a person by their ability to recover from harm and their life after they have experienced bullying, harassment, exploitation, and abuse. 👩 🧑 A survivor centred approach – means that we put the rights of each survivor at the forefront of all actions concerning them and ensure that each survivor is treated with dignity and respect. By putting the survivor at the centre of the process, our approach promotes recovery, reduces the risk of further harm and reinforces the agency and self-determination of the survivor. Practising a survivor-centred approach means that we establish a relationship with the survivor that promotes their emotional and physical safety and aim to help survivors restore control over their life. ✨The guiding principles of our survivor-based approach are: - Safety – ensure the physical and emotional safety of survivor(s) and their families. - Confidentiality – respecting the confidentiality of survivor(s) and their families. - Respect – respecting the wishes, choices, rights and dignity of survivor(s). - Non-discrimination – ensuring non-discrimination in all service provision. ☂A survivor-centred approach means that that the subject of concern will be treated in a respectful, non-discriminatory, confidential way and when their safety is ensured. #safeguarding #safeguardingtraining #speakupculture

Survivors should expect to work with professionals who partner with them, instead of approaching them with judgement and "telling" them the "right" choices. At @SafeandTogether we teach professionals how to partner with survivor. The first step starts with the basic step of communicating that it is the perpetrator, not the survivor, who is responsible for their own behavior and the harm it is creating for the adult and child survivors. The part about the children is particularly important as it helps reduce survivor shame and guilt, and starts the #PivotToThePerpetrator.
