Witnessing wonder one banana peel at a time: Inspiring tomorrow's scientists at Let It Shine Academy! Making a difference in the world of science starts small, with bright eyes brimming with curiosity. That's why we hosted our first-ever science fair at Let It Shine Academy (LISA), and the energy was electric! ✨ Our budding scientists dove headfirst into the fascinating world of life science, embarking on a quest to extract DNA from everyone's favourite potassium-packed fruit: the banana! From mashing mushy banana pulp to marveling at the tiny threads of life under microscopes, the excitement was palpable. Each step, each giggle, each "Woah!" moment reaffirmed our belief: igniting a passion for science in young minds is worth every ounce of effort. Because who knows? Tomorrow's groundbreaking discoveries, life-saving innovations, and world-changing solutions might just be born from a simple banana and a spark of wonder in a young scientist's eye. ‘Tis the Season…..Science Fair It is Science Fair season in the US. The stories, the interruptions, the expense, the logistics of running a smooth science fair. It is all there. (There is even a movie about it). It may be that having a science fair at your school is viewed by some as prestigious or demonstrates a commitment to good education. I think (and I seem to be a minority) if it is not an integral part of the science curriculum, all work is not done in class by every student, and it is a competition, it is inequitable. Period. The process of science is critical for learners to experience so they can understand aspects of our lives. Students can gain a good understanding of how science is conducted by doing a self-chosen and self-designed science project. A science fair can be great umbrella for presenting a project. Science investigation is so important to understanding science, science fair projects should be included in the curriculum and scheduled to be done in school. There are so many reasons to do the science fair this way, but the biggest is it is EQUITABLE. All students participate. It is the students' own design and work. The teacher can monitor and guide the progress and help if conflicts arise. The students can learn cooperation, self-control, and pacing skills during the project. Competition in science is famous or infamous (think Franklin, Watson, Crick, and Wilkins in their rush to beat Linus Pauling to the structure of DNA.) It makes great drama, but much of science is cooperative. Having a competition is not necessary and may send the wrong message about science. Judges? I find it hard to understand. What is the purpose of outside judges? If the teachers use their class rubrics for behaviors during preparation and their lab report grading rubric for the product, the process will fit into class expectations and be grounded in student development. Skip the judges. Invite families and the community to a science fair night where students present their chosen experiments and collect more data or at least show how they did their data collection. This can be an incredible experience for all participants. Let’s be sure the science fair is equitable, part of the curriculum, and helping our students participate in and understand the process of science. 📢 Congratulations to the winners of this year's European Union Contest for Young Scientists! #EUCYS 🏆 This year’s EUCYS edition, held in Brussels from 13-15 September, gathered 136 promising #young #scientists from 36 countries across the EU and beyond, who presented 85 different #projects to an #international jury of 22 highly qualified scientists and engineers with worldwide reputations in their chosen fields.   The winning projects shared a total of €62 000 in #prize money, including four 1st prizes of €7,000, four 2nd prizes of €5,000, four 3rd prizes of €3,500 and prestigious #scholarship and visits to the EIROforum, CERN, ESA, etc. The participants had all previously won first prizes in their home countries' national science competitions in their specific fields. The projects covered a broad spectrum of scientific areas, including biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environment, mathematics, medicine, physics and social sciences.   EUCYS is the most important student science fair in the EU set up by the European Commission in 1989. Each year, the event brings together the best young scientists aged 14-20 years old from the EU and beyond to present their projects to a panel of international judges. EUCYS aims to promote young European students’ careers in #Research & #Innovation by giving them the opportunity to compete and exchange with their peers at EU and international level and be guided by some of the most prominent scientists in Europe. One of EUCYS’ main goals is also to foster the participation of #young #women scientists in Research & Innovation, as they are still underrepresented in #STEM. This year, 50 of the 136 participants are young women.   EUCYS is hosted annually in a different European country. This workshop explains statistical methods designed to determine if your experimental results are real or caused by natural variation. They go over the basic parameters such as average, standard deviation, and variance. They define what a normal distribution is and compare it to a t distribution. They explain what probability is and how it relates to the area under a normal or t distribution. Included are detailed examples using equations to disprove the Null hypothesis and how to use a two sample t test and p values to prove if your data is real or just natural error.  This workshop is designed with a focus on students who have an interest in participating in science fairs. It is the experience of the author that statistical analysis plays a significant role in the experimental report and that judges base their scores heavily on the statistical presentation. These concepts are presented in these books, written by Gerald Bauldock. The Valley Science Fair is based on his son's experiences participating in the Delaware Valley Science Fair.
