My Vlog: Visit to a Household Biogas Plant: Cost Effective, Eco-Friendly and Sustainable

With the right strategy, biogas plants can be adapted to current conditions and become sustainable. One of the most important biogas plant concepts is the change to other #substrates. 🔁    Depending on market conditions and country, it may be economically and environmentally viable to switch to a different substrate for the #biomethane or biogas production.    In most cases, this means moving away from the use of energy crops and towards the use of residual and waste materials, manure or slurry. 🐄    But what are the concrete benefits of changing the type of substrate you use?    By using residuals and waste instead of energy crops, you can significantly reduce the amount of land used for cultivation and make better use of existing substrates.    The change does not have to be a 180-degree turn; even a partial change can have a noticeable effect.    Recently, demand for biomethane from residual and waste materials has increased, particularly in industry and the heating sector.    Therefore, switching substrates is particularly worthwhile for plants that have direct access to the alternative substrates.    In the next post, we will introduce the biogas plant concept of "retrofitting".

A great report from Friends of the Earth and Socially Responsible Agriculture Project shining a light on the true costs of manure biogas. Manure biogas is a false solution to climate change, and we should instead invest in real clean energy such as wind and solar while supporting agroecology as a farmer and environment-first model.

The U.S. Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) have released a Notice of Intent to issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to support R&D projects in the conversion of #algae, such as #seaweed, and wet waste #feedstocks into #biofuels and #bioproducts.    ✅Topic Area 1 aims to supporting R&D projects in the conversion of #seaweeds and waste #algae to low-carbon fuels and products ✅Topic Area 2 focuses on supporting R&D projects in the conversion of algal #biomass for low carbon agricultural products.   The intended FOA will meet both BETO’s strategic goals for #sustainableaviationfuel and other low carbon products, as well as FECM’s aims to use CO2 emissions to convert #macroalgae and microalgae into low-carbon agricultural products such as animal feed. The funding will play a critical role in achieving the Biden-Harris administration’s decarbonization goal of an equitable, #cleanenergy future of net-zero emissions, economy-wide by 2050. Excellent video! I have clients with large quantities of food, powder waste, and sugar liquids, but there's a shortage of biogas/digester companies in Ireland. Recycling companies aren't interested, so most of this waste has to be transported to Northern Ireland, resulting in a high transport CO2 impact. We need more local cooperative digesters.
