Earlier this year, Comcast Spectacor shared its vision for the redevelopment of the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, master planned by NELSON Worldwide, including new facilities for the Phillies and Flyers. Philadelphia Phillies managing partner and principal owner John Middleton and Comcast Spectacor CEO and Philadelphia Flyers Governor Dan Hilferty discussed the development opportunity in Philadelphia and our project at The Battery in Atlanta - the country's first destination anchored by a sports stadium - on SportsRadio 94WIP. "The [Philadelphia] Mayor has been down to Atlanta twice...She was so impressed that she emailed [Atlanta Braves CEO and Chairman] Terry McGuirk and said she'd like to come back down and bring more people...that should tell you everything you need to know about it. And the governor sees it as a significant - maybe the most significant - development opportunity in the state of Pennsylvania." Reflecting on the RFK #SuperBowlAd this morning, as both a #marketer and a #history enthusiast. I initially found it to be a stroke of genius, redoing the iconic JFK ad from the 60s (original below). It seemed to pay homage to his family legacy while offering a fresh perspective, akin to a Trump-esque 'Make America Great Again' message, albeit from a different vantage point. However, my perception shifted when I witnessed the backlash on social and the subsequent apology from RFK. It became apparent that while the ad may have resonated with those familiar with the campaign or history buffs like myself, its impact on the family's emotions was unforeseen, especially considering they were blindsided by its release. In the end, the real lesson that will live on in #marketing, #publicrelations, and #advertising textbooks for a different reason. Despite the considerable investment—reportedly $7M for the spot alone—the ROI appears dubious at best. The ad's polarizing reception underscores the importance of thorough audience research and sensitivity, lest the costs outweigh the benefits. What are your thoughts on this commercial and its aftermath? #SuperBowlAds #RFK #AdvertisingStrategy #BrandManagement

The Chicago Sports Network (CHSN), which will be in partnership with Standard Media Group, will be a free over-the-air broadcast. The teams expect carriage with most cable providers, but the biggest hurdle will be Comcast, the biggest cable provider in Chicago. One of the main upsides to the team broadcasting on NBC Sports Chicago was that Comcast carried them and the channel wasn’t placed in the most expensive cable tier. While fewer people subscribe to Comcast than years ago, it remains a vital platform in the Chicago area. The Cubs launched Marquee without carriage on Comcast and reached an agreement only right before Opening Day 2020. The Cubs needed three years to launch that for Marquee. The Vegas Golden Knights might have provided an ideal road map. The Golden Knights’ broadcasts are available over the air through a deal with Scripps Sports, but they also created a stream-only option, which began this past year. Fans can pay $69.99 for the season to stream all 69 locally broadcasted games. As long as you’re outside the local market, you won’t be blacked out from locally broadcast Blackhawks, Bulls or White Sox games if you pay for the respective league’s broadcasting service. Changes to the in-game broadcasts are unlikely because the teams employ those people. The teams will also have more of a say now on the studio talent. #DrexelSBIZ #SportBusiness #NBA #MLB #NHL #ChicagoBulls #ChicagoWhiteSox #ChicagoBlackhawks #ChicagoCubs #VegasGoldenKnights #NBCSports

It is looking like the National Basketball Association (NBA) is going to exit its exclusive negotiating window with The Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros. Discovery despite a new media rights deal being finalised with either company. The window allows the league to talk to only the current two rights holders before going to the open market, which began on 9th March and is going to end on Monday. Despite current NBA commissioner Adam Silver describing talks as “positive”, the league is expected to form a new rights deal with three or four partners. The current deal which splits between ESPN/ABC and TNT has paid the league an average of $2.7b over the past nine years, this deal runs out once the 2024/25 season is completed. It is also looking more likely that the NBA will be adding a streaming component to the next deal they make. With potential partners such as Amazon and NBC on the shortlist. Executives from Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery have had discussions about a more conservative approach to spending, this would decrease the size of the package they are looking to pay which would possibly open a door for at least one more partner. Mark Tatum, deputy commissioner of the NBA, said: “We’ve been meeting with our incumbents for months, and they’ve expressed an interest in renewing, and we are hopeful that we’re going to continue our partnership with them.” “I will say this, given the evolving media landscape, I think that we’re likely to emerge from this window with at least one additional partner.” #nba #streaming #disney #warnerbros #streamingservice #media #business

Green light for Jacksonville Jaguars ‘Stadium of the Future’ Jacksonville City Council has voted to approve the Stadium of the Future deal between the City of Jacksonville and the National Football League (NFL)’s Jacksonville Jaguars. The 19-member council approved the projected $1.4 billion renovation by a 14-1 margin with two abstentions. The stadium deal must be approved by NFL owners at their fall meetings in October. The agreement marks a critical step in a process that the Jaguars have worked toward for at least four years. The agreement will see the Jaguars and the city contribute $625 million each to the project, with the stadium undergoing major renovations. Work will get underway in 2026. The renovation will transform EverBank Stadium into a modern, state-of-the-art facility. The Jaguars originally announced plans for the renovation in the summer of 2023. The Jaguars said in a statement: "We’re excited that the City Council has approved this historic agreement that will keep the Jaguars in Jacksonville for decades to come, enhance the fan experience for NFL and non-NFL events, and provide a springboard for downtown growth starting with the completion of world-class riverfront parks. "The other portions of the community benefits agreement represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve the quality of life for citizens across Jacksonville. We remain committed to working with the City Council to pass those pieces of the package when they return in July." Shad Khan, Owner, Jacksonville Jaguars, said: "The belief and determination of Delores and Wayne Weaver to make the Jacksonville Jaguars a reality more than 30 years ago was reaffirmed today by the leadership of Mayor Donna Deegan, her team and the Jacksonville City Council. The message then, and now, should be clear. Never doubt Jacksonville!"
