Her commitment, often involving emergency vet care, prompted a significant life shift, leading her to settle in a house. Despite the challenges, Vanya's son grew up surrounded by the companionship of cats, fueling her lifelong dream of establishing a shelter to provide a safe haven for vulnerable animals. Despite investing significant funds each month, Vanya faces limitations in time and resources. Determined to make her dream a reality, Vanya is initiating the creation of a shelter in her city, Plovdiv, with plans for expansion. This cause is deeply personal, and she seeks legal and financial support to establish an organization, acquire land, collaborate with a building company, and hire staff. Vanya envisions a network of shelters, fostering community involvement through monthly Zoom meetings and aiming to provide refuge for every homeless animal. Despite common hurdles faced by those willing to help animals, Vanya urges the community not to ignore animals in need, especially during harsh winters when newborn animals are at risk. NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK VOLUNTEER SHOUTOUT: There are so many wonderful volunteers who dedicate their time to our lifesaving mission, and today we wanted to take a moment to thank longtime Lucky Dog Foster Katie Noble. In her own words, “I was first introduced to Lucky Dog in the summer of 2012 when I began searching for my first dog. I ended up adopting Kaylee, a pit mix, that September. After she settled in, I fostered a few Lucky Dogs on occasion, but really got into the foster mom life in 2017. Since then, I have fostered 250+ puppies, dogs, and kittens, and adopted another Lucky Dog in 2023.   My volunteer work with Lucky Dog has become a significant part of my identity. The job is more than just cuddles and kisses: it's the satisfaction of seeing each animal find their humans. It's knowing that, by taking in a litter of puppies, I'm making room for another litter to take their place in the shelter. It's getting to know all these animals as individuals. Everyone wants to find a "purpose" in life, something that defines them - rescue is mine, and some of my greatest personal achievements have been made possible due to Lucky Dog.   To anyone considering volunteer work with Lucky Dog, I say this: even the smallest contribution is invaluable to these animals. They always need a driver to get them to adoption events or vet appointments. They always need a human to hold their leash while they meet potential families. Documents need to be printed and travel crates need to be cleaned. Donations don't have to be extravagant - the #1 item I use on a daily basis is paper towels! The process of pulling an animal from the shelter and finding them the perfect home requires so many people doing so many different types of jobs, and all of them are absolutely necessary. Every morning at 5 AM, I go to the beach to monitor sea turtle activity. 🐢 Sea turtles are nocturnal animals. Female sea turtles typically come ashore at night to lay their eggs, as nighttime provides cooler temperatures and protection from predators. The nesting process includes emerging from the sea, digging the nest, laying eggs, covering it, and returning to the sea—often leaving tracks in the sand. The main goal is to identify traces, locate their nests, and ensure their protection. By starting early, before beach activities begin, it is possible to create a safe space for the next generation of sea turtles. The first day I volunteered at my local animal shelter, I didn't enjoy it. I happened to arrive at a busy time, there was no one to show me around, and if you've ever heard the sound of 80+ dogs barking, you'll know it can feel intense! I went to help. I wanted to be useful, but as I stood there with people and dogs milling around me, I didn't know how. A more confident person might have grabbed a lead and got stuck in. I'm quite shy in new situations, so I went and hid in the cat house. Much more civilised 😂 Luckily, a lovely and experienced volunteer found me and asked if I wanted a tour. He introduced me to every dog, told me about the rules and routines, and went on my first walk with me. After that, all was well (I now go 4-5 times a week to help out and walk dogs like the gorgeous Glenda pictured above). The shelter is a tiny, under-resourced charity, they need volunteers to function. It's completely understandable that they don't have time for a formal induction. But... how how could they make sure everyone who walks through the gate with the intention to help feels able to? That's something I'm helping them with at the moment: - what to expect when you arrive - setting up a buddy system with a more experienced volunteer - having rules and routines clearly displayed - adding a few words under each animals' name to describe them Volunteers Week is coming up (3-9 June), and if you're planning to recruit new volunteers, you might want to think about how you'll set expectations and welcome people before you design your advert. Well, we don't like to think about it. 💔 But YOU can change those heartbreaking odds! Today, for International Day of Stray Animals, we'd to raise #awareness by sharing 5 facts regarding pet homelessness: 1️⃣ In the US, 6.5 million dogs and cats entered shelters in 2023 (shelteranimalscount.org); 2️⃣ Costa Rica is the only No-Kill Nation in the Americas, having outlawed euthanasia in 2003 (onegreenplanet.org); 3️⃣ In the US, every year Around 710,000 stray animals are returned to their owners (ASPCA.org); 4️⃣ The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates there are nearly 200 million stray dogs worldwide and an even higher number of stray cats; 5️⃣ The Netherlands are the first country in the world to reach 0 stray dogs (dutchreview.com). This is going out in my company newsletter, but I wanted to share it here, too. It's about Sanctuary One's upcoming volunteer week. It would be great if you could come out. 😀 You’ve heard the phrase: It takes a village to ______________. Usually used to emphasize how difficult it is to raise a child, the well-known idiom can apply to any number of things that are best served with a team. Quite a few things, as it turns out. “…run a care farm” is one of them. For the last year and a half, I’ve witnessed that reality firsthand at Sanctuary One, Southern Oregon’s own care farm out in the Applegate Valley. As vice president for the organization’s board of directors, I now know the benefits to a community such an effort can reap. I know of the peaceful environment that rescued farm animals can heal and live out their days in, of the joy that comes from finding adoptable ones forever homes. I know of the programs intended to benefit service-learning groups, of the field trips for educating youth and the tours for educating anyone, of the gardens that yield quite a bit of produce for local food banks. The organization’s motto is “People, Animals, and the Earth: Better Together,” which makes perfect sense. It takes a village to, well, everything. I know how fulfilling volunteering in such an environment can be, and I’m asking you to join me later this month. Sanctuary One’s eighth annual volunteer week is April 14-20, with sessions held from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day, and there’s plenty to get done out at the 55-acre property. There’s fence mending, garden work, building toys for the animals, grooming, managing blackberry bramble, shoveling, mucking, and more. Much more. Oh, and lunch and a t-shirt are included.
