Two years ago I started the interesting research on collaborative living practices across Europe, together with Emma Jo Griffith and Federico Savini we wrote this paper based on 100 collaborative housing practices. In the paper we argue that collaborative housing is generally defined by what it is not: it is neither solely private tenure nor fully state-run public housing. As a result, housing studies have not fully captured the great diversity of collaborative housing forms. This article develops a complex typology of collaborative housing based on an analysis of 100 cases from Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Austria, the Netherlands, and Germany. We identify differentiating features across three key dimensions: the architecture of the estate, the institutional set-up of its property rights, and the values motivating the collective inhabiting and managing of the estate. We then apply our typology using the case of the 4Stelle Hotel, a collaborative housing estate in Rome. This study lays the foundations for future international comparative research that moves beyond the reductive understanding of collaborative housing as property sharing. Cork City is set to be transformed by a €2.5 billion Euro investment over the next 5 years, influencing every aspect of the cities work and leisure offering. The cultural and culinary capital of Ireland is set to benefit from investments of €1.9 billion on housing, €120 million on walking and cycling facilities, €200 million on rail and light rail planning, €35 million on a new city library, €25 million of public realm improvements and €190 million on Cork Docklands. These further enhance the live and work credentials of a city scoring high in international charts, with the city recently named second best in Europe for retirement, second for friendliness and number one in Europe for economic potential. It's now great to see, a little over a year from starting the discussions with Center for Innovation, that a group of Ukrainians can follow up DOBROBAT-CFI July event in Kyiv with a meet-up in the USA. #Ukraine was invaded 20 February 2014. 9 years, 10 months and 2 days ago. Feb 2022, when my friends in Kyiv woke up to the sounds of missile explosions, many experts gave Ukraine 96 hours. The people of this great country have been extending the initial 96 hours into ~700 days with the help of Western countries, primarily with financial and military support. Ukrainians were not asking for troops, just the weapons they could fight with, and the world answered. Similarly, the #construction industry in Ukraine is asking the Western #AEC industry to contribute by sharing the know-how for the best practices of #construction so they can rebuild Ukraine beyond the initial replacement of broken windows, fixing damaged roofs, and clearing walkways. Dobrobat started by helping Armed Forces of Ukraine make de-occupied territories liveable for the local residents. Nothing fancy--replace broken windows, fix damaged roofs, clear walkways. Local residents take non-military tasks off their hands so the warriors can focus on freeing the rest of their land. The battalion of the "kindness" DOBRO-BAT. I can't wait to see my friends Dean Reed, Andrii Lakshtanov and many more working through many much-needed topics together in January.
