Today, we mark 63 years since Cork Airport first opened its doors! 🥳 🎈 On October 16, 1961, Cork officially entered the "air age" and since then, we have connected millions of passengers, travelling on journeys to and from the four corners of the world. 🌍 🛫 Today, Cork Airport continues to play a valuable role for the economy of the south of Ireland and is a key economic enabler, contributing over €1 billion to the Irish economy and supporting over 12,000 jobs. October 16, 1961 was a red-letter day for the city, county and wider Munster region, with the celebrations making the front pages of many daily newspapers including the Evening Echo, Irish Examiner, Irish Independent and Irish Press - all conveying the importance and excitement around the opening of "Cork's own airport". Here's to another 63 years - and many more to follow! 🍾 ✈️

Last week marked a significant milestone for Cork, Cork ETB, and local industries, with substantial commitments and investments from local and Government bodies. SOLAS and Enterprise Ireland have partnered in a strategic initiative to expand access to upskilling programs aimed at boosting growth and competitiveness among small, medium, and micro-enterprises in Ireland. This partnership reinforces Cork ETB’s commitment to industry collaboration. Building on this momentum, Minister O’Donovan approved the next phase of the FET College of the Future initiative at Cork College of FET, setting the stage for a world-class learning environment for students, staff, and the broader community. Additional funding from SOLAS has also enabled Cork College of FET to create a new healthcare simulation suite at the Morrison’s Island Campus, addressing the growing demand for healthcare courses in the Cork area. With strategic investments like these, Cork College of FET is well-positioned to meet the needs of the community and support high-demand sectors. The future is bright! Great news alert! We are delighted to be ranked 21st (up from 26th) in this year’s Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS-Movement) index. This result is testament to the hard work that is being done across the tourism sector in #Cork to drive the #sustainability agenda. Our achievement wouldn’t be possible without the huge support of our stakeholders as the submission requires input from all sectors - Fáilte Ireland Cork City Council - Comhairle Cathrach Chorcaí Cork County Council Cork Airport Cork Chamber Cork Branch Irish Hotels Federation. Massive thanks also to Katherine Fitzpatrick. We still have plenty of room for improvement, but each year we are challenging ourselves to do more and do better. If every tourism business takes on one sustainability challenge and aims to improve, then the overall standards across the region increase. Congratulations to our business event colleagues across Ireland who also ranked in the Top 40. What an amazing achievement for Team Ireland!
