This Monday, Brecht De Roo, Director Sustainability Europe for Carmeuse, shared the stage with Belgian Minister for Energy Tinne Van der Straeten and Dr Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), in the frame of the World Energy Outlook 2023 organized by #SPF Economy and #Agoria.
Brecht presented the current challenges of a hard-to-abate industry such as Carmeuse:
• The bulk of CO2 emissions come from Scope 1, among which unavoidable ‘process emissions’ from the stone itself represent 75% of total, while 25% come from the fuels used in the kilns
• Carmeuse is already well engaged in its carbon neutrality roadmap and has already invested in the best available technology across its European plants
• The next steps will be to switch from fossil fuels to carbon-neutral fuels, and to develop carbon capture capacities on production sites; this represents huge capital and operating expenditures in the coming years
To tackle these challenges, hard-to abate industries need:
• An efficient, cross-border CO2 transport infrastructure
• A clear, long-term vision on green energy (electricity and biomass) supply in terms of volumes and cost

5moWhats the difference in burning Kero vs SAF? Aaaa, now I remember from Kero is resulting CO2 and from SAF “green” CO2! Ok, now ITS clear “green” CO2 is much better than classical CO2 in terms of pollution!
