My latest Omdia report (subscription required) examines the progress of the GSMA's #OpenGateway initiative one year on from launch and how various technology vendors are positioned. 47 multinational mobile operator groups (representing 65% of global subscribers) have joined the initiative but 13 of these have still not made any launch announcements. There are notable gaps in major economies such as India, and Canada, where no operators have publicly announced API launches. In several other countries only one operator has launched. These gaps must be filled in soon to make network APIs more appealing to developers that are creating apps to serve consumers globally. The APIs that seem to be of greatest interest so far are antifraud-related: 25 operators have launched SIM Swap APIs, and 22 have launched Number Verification. QoD is less common given the technical challenge of implementing this capability in the network. Microsoft has announced the most telco partners for its API aggregation platform (Azure Programmable Connectivity) so far, well ahead of Ericsson's Vonage, Nokia's Network-as-Code. The other main contenders for network API aggregation are Infobip and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Google has been less visible but recently announced a collaboration with ClearX to make Open Gateway APIs available via its cloud console. Another notable vendor is LotusFlare whose BSS suite is used in T-Mobile's DevEdge developer marketplace and Deutsche Telekom's MagentaBusiness API portal. Operators’ own developer portals are unlikely to be the main distribution channel for network APIs. However, the operators’ developer programs can help them to co-create and innovate with their enterprise customers, tailoring solutions to solve specific problems or develop new services. https://lnkd.in/eDHqEGat

𝙊𝙣 𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙘𝙤 𝘼𝙋𝙄 𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙪𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙨... A couple of loose thoughts (untested), inspired by discussion (here: https://lnkd.in/g63wn-7w) around this publication: https://lnkd.in/gScCW_su 1️⃣ Any extra revenue is usually based on USP. There is no USP in APIs by design, because of *interoperability* and *openness*. Linux does not make money by being open 2️⃣ Everyone talks about the universe of APIs, but I wonder what the pricing will look like, because some APIs in CAMARA generate different cost pressure (SCEF/NEF, HSS/UDM, etc.). 3️⃣ Complicated pricing = unforecastable TCO for Enterprise = Procurement/Finance does not like budget with huge error margins in the EBITDA. Meaning Telcos will have to offer either bundles and/or caps. Just like their vendors ;) 4️⃣ Obviously, developers are key and marketplace is an interesting but not the only sales channel. A marketplace in the absence of USP will tend to lower the prices but making comparisons. A better channel would be through "Solutions" (aka System integration). 5️⃣ Revenue sharing works reasonably if Telco controls the garden. But: see 1 and 4 6️⃣ In fact, the availability of APIs may well lead to closed garden solutions OUTSIDE of any marketplace. The marketplace will host low-cost apps. Scalability becomes a challenge. But there could be interesting ways for Telcos to gain edge
What it will take for telcos to unlock value from network APIs

Learn how Rakuten Symphony and 1&1 AG built Europe’s most modern, software-driven mobile network in Germany 💯 Full story: https://lnkd.in/gECCAt4B "All network functions are located in our private cloud and are controlled by software. As a system integrator, Rakuten also ensures that all network components interact smoothly. In this way, 1&1 benefits from the extensive experience that Rakuten has gained in recent years in operating the world's first Open RAN in Japan. The full functionality of the 1&1 O-RAN is a major milestone in our company's history." -- Ralph Dommermuth, CEO of 1&1 AG In 2021, 1&1 picked Rakuten Symphony to build Germany’s fourth mobile network and the industry anticipated a revolutionary software-driven design. Just 28 months later, the network launched as promised with a fully cloud-native approach across core, OSS, BSS and RAN. 1&1 anticipated that the network would be more agile, highly modularized, and based on a software-first approach – and they were right. Now, the two companies have published a case study (https://lnkd.in/gb7EKm5y) that describes the network building process and the resulting network capabilities in full detail. Here are some of the key network stats 📖 a) 1&1 is running Europe’s first end-to-end fully containerized network entirely on the cloud. b) In 2023, 1&1 launched its enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) service for mobile. The eMBB network featured cloud-native technology and automation/AI capabilities. c) 80 partner vendors contributed to the building and network integration. d) More than 10,000+ features and functionalities were tested and validated for customer onboarding, as well as billing and service offerings. e) With Rakuten Symphony on board, 1&1 published results from a friendly user trial that showed peak network speeds of 1 Gigabit/second (on 50MHz NR, 10 Mhz LTE) and low latency of 3 ms with mMIMO and 32 and 64TR. f) Using the Rakuten Telecom Platform, 1&1 was able to spin up central, regional and edge data centers in a shorter time than legacy platforms. What's Next ⏭ Now that the network is operational, 1&1 is now migrating its more than 12 million mobile virtual network customers to the new mobile network and working towards a 2030 coverage target of 50 percent of all German households. The success of this network is a blueprint for how to roll out next-generation greenfield networks. Post Mortem Impact: A complete outage of the e-commerce platform, preventing users from browsing, adding items to cart, and completing purchases. Approximately 95% of users were affected. Root Cause: A misconfigured load balancer rule caused traffic to be routed to an inactive backend server. Timeline * Monitoring alerts indicated a significant drop in website traffic and increased error rates. * Engineering team initiated incident response protocol. Initial investigation focused on application servers and database. * After ruling out application and database issues, the network team joined the investigation. * A misconfigured load balancer rule was identified as the potential culprit. * The load balancer configuration was corrected. * System stability was confirmed, and service was restored. Root Cause and Resolution The root cause of the outage was a misconfigured load balancer rule. The rule incorrectly routed traffic to an inactive backend server, resulting in service unavailability. To resolve the issue, the load balancer configuration was updated to correctly distribute traffic across active backend servers. Corrective and Preventative Measures To prevent similar incidents in the future, the following actions will be taken: * Enhance load balancer monitoring: Implement more granular monitoring on load balancer health and configuration. * Strengthen incident response procedures: Review and refine incident response protocols to accelerate troubleshooting. * Implement automated failover: Explore options for automated failover mechanisms to mitigate the impact of similar issues. * Conduct regular audits: Perform routine audits of infrastructure configurations to identify potential risks. Specific tasks: * Add monitoring for load balancer rule changes and health checks. * Create a dedicated incident response playbook for load balancer related issues. * Evaluate options for load balancer high availability and failover. * Schedule quarterly infrastructure audits. By implementing these measures, we aim to significantly reduce the likelihood and impact of future outages.
