As the founder of Styleindi GmbH, aimed at closing the product inclusivity & botanical innovation gap in the beauty industry, I've seen firsthand how having a powerful vision helped me defy the odds. Whether it's building 2 companies from scratch, breaking historic barriers by becoming the first Black women raising venture capital in cosmetic CPG in Germany, or driving biotech innovation for cosmetics from african botanicals nobody looks at, my journey thus far embodies the phrase "Against all odds". **LIFE IS SHORT: BE INTENTIONAL AND CONNECT WITH THOSE WHO INSPIRE YOU** Last November, I had the incredible opportunity to attend a gala in the Dallas-Fort Worth area where I met Thasunda Brown Duckett, one of only two Fortune 500 black female CEOs. It was such a thrill to shake her hand and share a few words! Fast forward to this year, and I was eager for another inspiring encounter. At the Cadence Design Systems FEM AI Conference, I got to reconnect with Dr. Joy Buolamwini, a trailblazer in AI whose work I deeply admire. It was so special to be remembered by her and snap a photo together. (Stay tuned—she shared that exciting news is on the way! Another Netflix movie? Fingers-crossed). I was also thrilled to finally meet Aicha Evans, the CEO of Zoox, an autonomous vehicle company. I’ve been trying to connect with her since 2020, but timing always seemed to get in the way. When I saw she was featured in a fireside chat, I knew I had to seize the moment! As she wrapped up her talk, I turned to my seatmate and declared I was going to shake her hand. It’s on like an automaton! We ended up chatting, laughing about our near-misses, and even made plans to connect further. As someone who grew up in tech—from card readers and disk packs to the web and driverless vehicles—I’ve often seen too few women in leadership roles. The common advice many women receive—“Work hard and keep your heads down”—can stifle the visibility of role models and mentors. It’s time to retire that mantra! Ladies, yes, work hard! But also lift your heads, celebrate each other, and inspire those around you.
