But what is the cause of the problem? As we show in the forthcoming Regional Economic Outlook, Europe's aggregate productivity problem can be traced back to performance differences at the firm level. Among large, leading companies, productivity and innovation have diverged markedly across both sides of the Atlantic. Market valuations of US-listed firms have more than tripled since 2005, while Europe’s have grown by only 60 per cent. While valuations can reflect expectations that end up unmet, our analysis suggests that the divergence stems also from a productivity gap across all industries and is particularly pronounced in technology sectors. Productivity for US technology firms has surged by nearly 40 per cent since 2005, yet it’s little changed for European companies. This significant difference is underpinned by much greater innovation efforts among enterprises in the United States, where research and development spending as a share of sales is more than double that of Europe. Europe also suffers from a broader lack of business dynamism beyond large corporations. There is a lower number of startups, and too few among them grow fast and eventually become large firms.  In the United States, the fastest-growing young companies employ six times more people (as a share of total employment) than their European counterparts. With fewer successful young firms, there are also fewer large and highly productive companies later on. There is, instead, an overabundance of small and low-growth firms. Europe’s weaker business dynamism is partly due to constraints to scaling up—particularly in innovation. How do you navigate the economy today with all the rapid changes and challenges? On the one hand, we're seeing many innovations that are impacting almost every sector, but on the other, it's hard to see significant progress in improving prosperity in different parts of the world. I believe that productivity is an issue that we really need to address in the near future, and the recent McKinsey Global Institute report "Investing in productivity growth" provides valuable perspectives on past achievements and future potential in this area. Productivity has become a hot topic not only globally, but also in Latvia, where it's increasingly recognised as a cornerstone of economic development. It's clear that Latvia is not alone in facing productivity challenges; Western Europe has also been facing hurdles in this regard for some time. Now more than ever, the world needs sustained productivity growth to meet challenges such as ageing populations, energy transitions and supply chain dynamics. McKinsey's report shows us clearly that we need to invest in productivity to keep moving forward. The authors emphasise the importance of targeted investments in digitalisation, automation and artificial intelligence. From Hong Kong-Australia to Brazil Market Access or Investment?? As a Strategic Business Growth Advisor, I am impressed by Brazil, one of the founding countries of BRICs. OBSERVATIONS For Australian enterprises, the Brazil’s population of 216,422,446 (2023) is approximately 10 times larger than the Australian population. Australian market is too small as compared with Brazil. Australian Sectors such as Fintech, Healthtech and IT could consider diversifying their market and expand to Brazil. For Chinese enterprise especially in manufacturing, export, and mining sector, the Brazil market, natural resources and abundant labor forces will be VERY attractive to them for direct investment into Brazil’s mineral resources, agricultural and/or setting up of their factories (i.e. much closer to other Latin American countries) .
