MetroLab Network is a collaborative of cities, counties and universities driving positive impact in communities by putting science and research into city halls. Their annual summit , which is taking place October 1st-2nd in Washington, DC, brings together 150+ local government leaders, innovators, and academic researchers from across the civic ecosystem that aim to intentionally bring two vital public institutions together in partnership: our local governments and universities. On the heels of generational investment from the federal government, innovation and economic growth is a priority in regions across the country. As this moves forward, communities are also grappling with complex problems that require capacity, research, and partnership. This year, the summit will focus on “An R&D Agenda in Service of Cities” – or how local governments consider research as an asset, and how this can move forward step by step with the university community during this time of innovation and economic investment. Have you read "STEMM Equity and Excellence 2050: A National Strategy for Progress and Prosperity"? It outlines a vision for building a U.S. STEMM workforce that expands opportunities and reflects the diversity of our nation by 2050. As STEMM educators and professionals we have vital roles to play in this. A small example is how we communicate our work. For years I've been talking about the importance of highlighting the impact of our research and its value. But all too often we are more interested in talking about how difficult and demanding the work is. For example, in my own field, I could tell you that, I create superior thermoelectric materials which minimize lattice thermal conductivity via enhanced Umklapp scattering while maintaining the electrical conductivity through high degrees of long range order parameter to produce high ZT devices. What do you think? Who wants to come work with me? But what if I told you, my team is looking for ways to convert waste heat to usable electricity by creating highly efficient thermoelectric devices. I suspect many more people are interested in working on this team! Language is important and we need to start paying attention to our messaging so that we can attract the needed STEMM workforce of the future. So how's this for a message? Engineers are changing the world all the time. They dream up creative, practical solutions. They work with other smart, inspiring people to invent, design and create things that matter. Things such as alternative energy, clean water, and better medical treatments. Engineering is essential to our health, happiness and safety. https://lnkd.in/eQJCNkQY

Home  Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships (TIP)  Latest Global competition in science, engineering and technology is fierce, pushing the United States to accelerate the impact of research. Our ability to lead on the world stage and keep our nation secure is directly tied to our ability to accelerate breakthrough technologies, translate research results to the market and society, and attract and nurture diverse talent into the U.S. science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce, including researchers, practitioners, technicians, entrepreneurs, educators and more. This work is predicated on investments by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).  Over the past two years, NSF’s nascent and growing Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships (TIP) – together with the rest of NSF – has worked to foster innovation ecosystems, accelerate technology translation and development and grow the STEM workforce.   TIP’s impact is already felt nationwide.
