Our latest global Ethylene market snapshot is now available on our website. Read in full here - https://hubs.ly/Q02Czx9C0 "The ethylene market continued to buckle under heavy capacity addition and relatively weak demand growth in 2023. While the outlook is for a mild recovery in demand in 2024, the operating rate outlook is essentially flat, which will mean limited scope for demand growth in the most embattled regions. The United States and Middle East cash cost of integrated ethylene/polyethylene production remained at around half of the level of naphtha cracking complexes in Europe and Asia. The delta increased in quarter one of 2024, and the fight-to-the-death for market share continues. Some weaker producers in Europe and Asia have been making unsustainable losses since 2022 and expected to be forced out of the market, conceding their share of ethylene consumption to new market entrants in China, and the advantaged NGL-based exporters." BLOG: Supermajors versus Deglobalisation scenarios: The impact on petrochemicals and recycling HERE ARE TWO scenarios or roads down which the petrochemicals industry will travel over the next ten years, with arrival either at Supermajors or Deglobalisation –Under Supermajors, the industry would be dominated by global oil and gas companies. –Under Deglobalisation, markets would become much more regional as local players avoided what could otherwise be a major wave of consolidation. This would be thanks to new trade barriers and other support from governments. "New WRI analysis looks at defossilization opportunities in the U.S. for four primary chemicals: ethylene, propylene, ammonia and methanol. It assesses total demand for each, identifies today’s most promising defossilization technologies and estimates the volume of these feedstocks needed to meet demand. It also maps out where alternative feedstocks are or could be located effectively in relation to existing chemical plants and infrastructure." https://lnkd.in/gGr4dVk4

🔍 General Thoughts: We compare US, Europe, and Asia spot polymer prices, showing that Europe prices reflect premiums – a plus for its post-consumer recycled (PCR) resin producers, but the math for most still is not working! Global Polymers Market Update: A Plastics Focus Swing To Emissions Adds To The US Competitive Edge: Exports Rise Again? | https://hubs.li/Q02LktP10 🔍 Supply Chain/Commodities: Most North American resin producers benefit from lower costs than Europe and Asia, and North America could benefit further if resin buyers shift focus from PCR content to emission reduction goals. 🔍 Energy/Upstream: Brent Crude and Ex-US naphtha values reflect higher levels than US natural gas and USGC ethane, respectively, compared to 2015—19 levels – a notably beneficial trend for North American chemicals. 🔍 #Recycled/Renewable #Polymers: We discuss missed European waste collection and recycled material targets, a category where the region should win as its economics are more geared to waste sorting costs than energy prices. 🔍 Downstream/Other Chemicals: We discuss global packager consolidation, the streamlining of operations, and the push among some away from sustainable solution targets and more toward value-chain emission reductions.
