It was a pleasure to co-chair the APSCo Clinical & Healthcare Sector meeting with Benton Robertson last week; hosted by Tania Bowers, Global Public Policy Director at APSCo. We had fabulous insights from Kate Harper, Director of Research & Insights at NHSP Professionals, giving their view on the flexible workforce landscape and the #nhsworkforce plan. Key takeaways: • the #nhs acknowledge the need for a contingent workforce with 140,000 in the plan • NHSP were, like members, surprised by the lack of ‘winter pressure’ demand this year but puts it down to lack of budget as the need is there • The ultimate aim is ‘one workforce’; substantive, bank and #recruitment working collaboratively and seamlessly across care settings Novello Healthcare's mission is to create a sustainable agency model as part of the contingent workforce, working with partners across the sector to make this happen. I am excited to see where this win can take our service, the direction of healthcare funding for primary care services such as ours, and indeed the nursing profession. I am so proud to be a nurse AND to win a business award. @Earworx showcases what nurses are capable of within their roles in the healthcare sector, working to their maximum scope and referring back and forth to GPs and audiologists for the benefit of the patient. In doing so, we reduce burdens on other areas of the healthcare system. In Australia we need to take another look at the funding model to ensure the healthcare funding bodies support innovative primary care services. All Australians deserve equitable access to the services they need in the communities in which they live. The regulatory model in Australian healthcare has moved well ahead of the funding model, which now needs to catch up. Looking to the future, with investment, I am excited about our continued nationwide expansion. We are looking to grow our service AND work with the Federal Government and Private Healthcare Funds to increase accessibility to all Australians. In Locumpedia's recent survey exploring the locum tenens industry's trajectory in 2024, leaders from diverse staffing firms were unanimous in expecting strong growth in locums this year despite the headwinds faced by nursing and other healthcare segments. This year, Staffing Industry Analysts predicts the locum tenens market will expand by 7% -- but our participants were even more bullish. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gGu5FFUE In this year's survey, we heard from Natasha Lee of Floyd Lee Locums, Kim Herrmann of Wapiti Medical Staffing, Drew Cihlar of Hayes Locums, Matt Young of All Star Healthcare Solutions, Joe Brunson of Tusk Enterprises, and Ty Chambers of RosmanSearch. These locum leaders pointed to a surge in demand, especially in underserved areas, and noted the role of AI in enhancing operational efficiencies. However, potential regulatory changes regarding the independent contractor status of providers emerged as a significant concern for the industry's future. 💰 In the Spring budget, the Chancellor has announced a £3.4 billion investment in NHS digitisation, aiming to modernise IT systems and enhance patient care. Jeremy Hunt stated that this will double investment in NHS technological and digital transformation over the next 3 years and should deliver £35bn of productivity savings over the next ~5 years. 😧 GPs ‘working a day a week less than 2022 The BMA’s latest survey of sessional GPs has revealed a huge trend in the GP workforce crisis, as hundreds reported that work was down compared with only a couple of years ago. At a time when we know that patients are struggling to get GP appointments, GPs have confirmed their desire for work, and to work more hours, but somehow are just not being appointed. But on the other hand, NASGP’s own data from areas of the country using our one-step, real-time booking system LocumDeck, the number of sessions booked is up 15% compared to last year. Practices need better systems and more support in hiring substantive GPs, and regions that are struggling with patient access need to deploy smarter methods for booking GP locums to ensure primary care services do not suffer any further.
