In a new blog published by the International Peace Institute (IPI), Adam Day (he/him), Head of UNU-CPR's Geneva Office, argues that the Summit of the Future lacks a clear environmental agenda. Although one of the Summit's pillars focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Day argues that this alone does not constitute a robust environmental agenda. Furthermore, the recently finalized "zero draft" of the Summit's outcome document, titled the "Pact for the Future," reaffirms existing environmental commitments but lacks significant new initiatives. Day argues that it’s not too late for UN Member States to generate a planetary narrative and outcome for the Summit. He offers several steps they could take: 🔹 Issue a Declaration of Planetary Emergency at the Summit of the Future. 🔹 Commit to phasing out fossil fuels. 🔹 Double the G20 commitment on climate. 🔹 Align the global financial architecture with sustainability. 🔹 Move beyond Gross Domestic Product. 🔹 Expand and strengthen the UN Environmental Programme. 🔹 Support the early appointment of an Envoy for Future Generations well before the Summit. Métis National Council technical experts have wrapped up their time at the 60th Session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB60). The June UN Climate Meetings are critical preparatory meetings ahead of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 29th Session of the Conference of Parties (COP29) taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan in November. SB60 focused on technical and scientific matters, as well as the implementation of the climate treaties, including key priorities such as Loss and Damage, Article 6, Climate Finance, the Global Stocktake, Just Transition, and Adaptation. MNC continues to put pressure on United Nations entities and Member States to facilitate the full and effective participation of Indigenous Peoples. One way of doing this is through supporting the continued work of the Facilitative Working Group (FWG), which is the established body established to further operationalize the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP) and facilitate the implementation of its three functions related to knowledge, capacity for engagement, and climate change policies and actions. This session of SB60 negotiated the continuation of the mandate of the FWG, reaffirming the rights of Indigenous Peoples, and their critical role in the fight against climate change. In addition to actively participating in negotiations, MNC technical staff continued to participate in the Indigenous Peoples caucus. During a meeting with UN Climate Change High-Level Champions for COP28 and COP29, International Policy Advisor Kate Gillis delivered remarks on behalf of the North American region, reiterating our commitment to the respect, protection, and safeguarding of the rights of Indigenous Peoples, in line with the minimum standards affirmed in UNDRIP. The UN Climate Meetings ultimately provide a space in which MNC can build relationships and stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples across the globe in our shared fight against colonially caused climate change. Participation ensures continuity in following important negotiations and ensuring that Métis Nation priorities are reflected across the UNFCCC. #MétisNationalCouncil #MétisNation #SB60 #ClimateChange

We are significantly behind in our efforts to maintain the 1.5℃ goal set by the Paris Agreement! Climate change represents the most pressing crisis humanity currently faces, encapsulating a multifaceted challenge that spans environmental, economic, and social aspects. Addressing this complexity necessitates an integrated Resource Nexus Approach, which emphasises the interlinkages among diverse sectors and stakeholders. Following the decisions made at COP27, countries are obligated to present their updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for 2035 by early 2025. The year 2024 is pivotal, as governments are set to initiate the formulation of their new targets for 2035 while implementing their ongoing 2030 targets. The Nexus Seminar N.74 will host Seoyoung L. to explore the significance of the first round of NDCs submitted, showcase standout instances where the Resource Nexus Approach has been effectively reflected, and deliberate on strategies to embed it more thoroughly in the development of the forthcoming NDCs for 2035. The Nexus Seminar Series is coordinated by Serena Caucci and Samanthi Dijkstra-Silva #ResourceNexus
