How can banana agri-waste benefit the fashion industry? 🍌    Well, a lot more than you might think.  As a Next Generation Material, it is one of the alternatives for conventional materials. And it’s not just bananas. We see all different types of fibers being made from food waste. Cactus, pineapple, citrus, and mango - the list goes on. 🌵🥭🍋🍍    This type of material is getting more and more attention. And with good reason. They have a bunch of advantages like minimizing waste and a smaller environmental footprint. Like any other new innovation, though, they are not perfect yet. But if more brands begin working with them, they may become a great option to choose from when deciding which sustainability initiatives to take. 🌿 Seeing it is a valid alternative (or at least has the potential to be in the future), we have made it a part of our ESG Elephant. Have you considered sustainability in your operations? In fashion there are so many ways in which you can operate more sustainability. The aim being to reduce waste, production emissions and damage to the environment including biodiversity. Initiatives that are starting to emerge include: • platforms to rent items • using upcycled materials and repurposing existing materials • providing facilities for recycling • using more sustainable materials and dyes that use less of the natural resource and reduce pollutants emitted into the environment • better logistics practices such as shipping in bulk, reducing water material and using biodegradable shipping materials Once you’ve got your iniative it’s worth telling your consumers about it as increasingly they are looking for brands that have sustainable credentials. Be careful though, whatever you say should be accurate and not simply a marketing ploy, to avoid any claims for misleading advertising or greenwashing. Statistics can help you to establish where you’re at and there are lots of software providers that can help you calculate and record how your iniatives are working. Thank you Alessandra Gallo for this post. This is not only sad but also very true. In years of work in this field I have seen this happening countless times. 1. These new materials are often very unsustainable if only done small scale. They need to be able to reach their full potential to actually have a lower environmental impact. 2. #Brands use them to look good and at the same time kill a small startup with costs they have to face when starting small-scale production just to be dumped afterwards. 3. #Customers are fooled into the sustainability trap, such as capsule collections that don’t represent the majority of articles produced. I could go on and on with this topic as it is a problem I know all too well. But instead I just want to say: #please stop bullshitting and step up by supporting a true change rather than this greenwashing and killing startups!!!
