Four days into her role as Federal Minister for Housing, The Hon Clare O'Neil visited Nightingale. Accompanied by Peter Khalil MP, the group toured the 99 new sustainable homes at Nightingale Wurru Wurru Biik in Brunswick and the 48 homes under construction at Nightingale Umarkoo Wayi in Coburg. Hosting the group was Nightingale CEO, Dan McKenna. Signalling a desire to see more projects like Nightingale's underway to help address the housing crisis, it was great for the Minister to visit our newest, connected communities with community housing components and community at heart. Thanks for visiting Clare O'Neil Peter Khalil 📷️ Kate Longley #nightingalehousing #nightingale #housing #visit

It does, and if we intend to create prosocial cities for Canada's future, we have some work to do to understand and support better neighbouring. This is a good initiative - each local authority in England is obliged by law to keep a list of its properties and to indicate which are no longer needed. There are 600,000 empty properties in the U.K. and some 400,000 listed properties which could be brought into mainstream use to provide shelter for people - at the moment people on universal credit receive local housing allowance from their local authority which is paid to private landlords in many cases where accomdation is not really fit for human habitation. Why not keep the money in the local authority system ; refit empty properties all sides of the U.K. borders using latest green energy techniques and turn “ empties” into homes right across U.K. ….and Local Authorities already have powers to take over private sector empties under the Empty Property Management Scheme Order. They just choose not to do so in the main. Hopefully the Scots will turn property liabilities into property assets produce affordable housing and take the lead for the rest of the U.K. Everyone is entitled to a roof over their heads ; a foot on the property ladder 3 square meals a day and a chance to complete their educations in the world’s 6 th largest economy …..surely?

"Land is the basis of all independence. Land is the basis of freedom, justice, and equality." Malcolm X - Letter to the Grassroots I have written about the importance of land to our struggles for a just and livable future on this Earth. It is what allows us to have what I call Regenerative Space. "Regenerative Space consists of two elements: Place and Time. Place is activated by access to land. Without land we cannot create places for ourselves – to live, work, play, gather. Land is the material aspect of Place, but Place is more than the land and its location, as it incorporates multiple layers of meaning: our relationships with the land, the function it serves, its history, its current more-than-human inhabitants. Place is land made particular." https://lnkd.in/e-xXVqrk Seeing initiatives like this one in Scotland gives me hope. "The villagers of Muirkirk, a former mining community known for its religious revolutionaries and its footballers, have plans for the derelict petrol station they are about to buy for a knockdown price. An acre square of crumbling tarmac and scrub, it will soon become a community garden and a picnic stop for tourists travelling through Ayrshire on the A70, thanks to an unusual deal with one of Scotland’s oldest state institutions: the King’s and Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer (KLTR). Muirkirk’s old filling station is a case study for a major new initiative by the KLTR to give away, for a minimal fee, dozens of buildings, pieces of land, factories and offices across Scotland that have become ownerless and unused. Founded as the Scottish court of exchequer in 1707, the agency would ordinarily try to sell these properties at the market rate, passing on revenues to the Scottish government’s consolidated fund under a long-established system known as bona vacantia, where ownerless properties were transferred previously to the monarch and more recently to the state. Under the KLTR’s new ownerless property transfer scheme, due to formally start on 1 March, local communities will be offered buildings or land worth up to £500,000, potentially shifting millions of pounds worth of property into community ownership." #landrights #access #righttoroam #communitybuilding #wellbeing #hsd #needs #regenerative Ownerless Scottish properties to be handed to local communities https://lnkd.in/evp8Fifv

Local Government Specialist | Efficiency Enthusiast | Proud Dad | Supporting public sector organisations to better support communities.
Local authorities are facing significant challenges in managing temporary accommodation. A prominent issue is the rising demand and compliant properties. This increased demand strains limited resources and infrastructure, making it difficult to provide adequate and timely housing solutions. Additionally, the high costs associated with temporary accommodation, often resulting from reliance on private sector options, further stretch already constrained budgets. So if your local authority is struggling with financial pressures in ensuring suitable, safe, and supportive living environments for individuals and families in need. Then have a look at how we supported Milton Keynes council and get in touch for more information.
Since Milton Keynes City Council started using Access Adam Housing in 2021 they now have: 🏠 99.5% compliant properties 🏠 Over 1000 nightly let scheme bookings 🏠 Over 200 assured shorthold tenancy (AST) bookings 🏠 8 people in hotels, reduced from 100! 🏠 240 accredited suppliers, increased from 4! All of this contributes to reducing homelessness in Milton Keynes ✨ Thank you to Danny Hassall from Milton Keynes City Council for talking to us about our Access Adam Housing solution. The full 8 minute interview can be watched here: https://ow.ly/oUma50S3VMv A full written explanation of our work together can be found here: ow.ly/pbfe30sCGx8 #Housing #Council #LocalGovernment #MiltonKeynes #CaseStudy #AccessAdam

When Housing Today reached out to say I'd be featured on this list I was extremely flattered. When reflecting on the questions that they had asked it reinforced the need in my mind for housing providers to think about longevity, in their properties, people and systems. EDI is often thought of as a throw away role, something done at the side of someone's desk. It is SO much bigger than that. It's about cultural change, its about understanding the needs of so many and the changes that a buissness needs to make to make those needs a reality. I was talking to Christina McGill at the Housing Diversity Network conference about the need for the M4(2)and (3) standards to be adopted by those developing properties and the amazing work Habinteg do in this area. We need to set clear targets for building accessible homes, homes that will last longer and be accessible to all. So why the M4(2) and (3) standards? 🏡 Less need for costly 'after the fact' adaptations 👥 Properties that are accessible to all 🙋♀️Properties that suit the needs of the individual 💰 Minimal or no additional cost if considered from the outset
"We have a unique opportunity to make our homes accessible to all in the long term, whether that is building properties to a higher standard (M4) or ensuring that adaptations are consistent and relevant to all" Lili Vetter of Wythenshawe Community Housing Group is one of Housing Today’s Top 30 Housing Champions #HTEveryPersonCounts #Top30HousingChampions https://lnkd.in/eTnaDxm8
