It has officially been one year since I started as Chief Sustainability Officer at PrimeAsia Leather Company. A lot has happened in one year as I've settled into the role and launched our new sustainability strategy, Sustainability Excellence, Preserving Tomorrow. Below are some of the highlights and accomplishments that I'm particularly proud of/excited about. Thank you to the PrimeAsia family for helping me get settled, I look forward to building our sustainability program together going forward. 1. 📝 Learning a New Industry - Coming from working at a brand level in the apparel industry, working at a supplier level in the leather leather industry has been completely new. Diving into learning about the leather making process at our tanneries in Vietnam and China has been the highlight of my year. Starting off the year with almost a month at our Vietnam facility in March and working with the talented local team to learn about topics like the chemical process of making leather, waste reduction efforts, operations of our waste water treatment plants, energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, etc. I couldn't have asked for better teachers and guides to get me started. 2. 📊 Double Materiality Assessment - I conducted research and spoke with key stakeholders to conduct a double materiality assessment of PrimeAsia's business. This analysis helped to inform priority areas for our Sustaining Excellence, Preserving Tomorrow strategy. 3. 👩🌾 Farm Level Engagement - From visiting farms in the US in May to attending the Regenerative Leather Field Trip in October at the Textile Exchange conference, I navigated the complexities of engaging farmers on sustainability initiatives connected to the leather supply chain. Traceability beyond the harvest facility will be key to our sustainability goals going forward, and I look forward to tackling this with our suppliers. 4. 🌎 Science Based Targets for Climate Action - Having come from a human rights background, I am thrilled to expand my expertise into climate action and grounding PrimeAsia's strategy in science based targets. We committed to setting SBTi targets in December and I look forward to seeing how the Science Based Targets for Nature evolve and how we can align our programs with this framework. 5. 🤝 Building New Relationships - I have been grateful to join an incredible team of experts in the leather industry and have enjoyed building relationships across our teams in the US, China, Vietnam, Taiwan and around the world. I have also enjoyed learning from our suppliers, customers and key stakeholder partners in the industry. Textile ReDesign Jam starts in 6 days! In this two-day event five companies from Finland, Sweden, Estonia, and Latvia present their challenges which will be solved in the Jam. The fourth company taking part is Lindström 👉 Lindström is a Finnish company that primarily operates in the textile services industry, offering solutions for workwear, industrial mats, hygiene, and cleanroom products. Their brand purpose and uniqueness may vary based on their marketing strategies and company values, which can evolve over time. Even though the company is originally Finnish, it operates in 23 countries, including Latvia, Estonia, and Sweden, employing over 5055 employees. 🌍 Lindstrom increasingly emphasizes sustainability, aiming to reduce environmental impact through measures such as water and energy conservation, eco-friendly detergents, and responsible waste management. ⏪ Let's go back in time and reminisce the Textile ReDesign Jam that was organised a couple weeks back. The international Textile ReDesign Jam was organised hybrid from February 29 to March 1, 2024. In the event, participants all over the Baltic Sea region came up with ideas and developed circular economy solutions to the challenges set by five different companies.   🌟 One of he challenge owner companies was Kesko - K-Group, which is a Finnish trading sector operator, biggest in Finland and one of the biggest in Northern Europe. They operate in the grocery trade, building and technical trade, and car trade. Kesko promotes sustainability in their whole value chain, from production to customer choices. The focus areas of their sustainability strategy are climate and nature, value chain, people, and good governance. 🎤 After the event, we interviewed Kesko's environmental manager Hanna Lehmuskoski and asked, what made Kesko take part in this event. “We wanted to see what kind of innovative ideas students can come up with when it comes to enhancing circularity in hypermarkets in Finland” said Hanna. 💬 Hanna described the background of the task as follows: “Circular economy is much more than just recycling or utilising our own side streams to new products, as important as these are too. We wanted to see what kind of innovative ideas students can come up with considering services, reuse, repair, and second-hand business.” Two groups competed in Kesko's challenge. The ideas of the groups were related to recycling, repairing and exchanging used clothes of consumers in the premises of K-Citymarket. 💥 “The ideas were innovative, bold, well-structured, and very versatile in their circular aspects. I am thrilled to share that I recently had the honor of representing Ample & Co.(PVT.)Ltd. as an entrepreneurial journey at the first Congress on Sustainable Materials in Sri Lanka, organized by Hayleys Aventura.This incredible event brought together industry experts from both Sri Lanka and around the world, all united by a burning desire to promote sustainable approaches in business. The congress featured insightful panel discussions across various sectors, including food, textiles, and medical industries, all focused on sustainability. Among these, the discussions on sustainable practices within the textile industry particularly resonated with me. I was able to engage with thought-provoking conversation with Sharina Perry which significantly broadened my perspective on sustainability.This interaction motivated me to explore and implement more circular economy approaches within my sustainable clothing brand. Textile production is one of the largest contributors to pollution and carbon footprints globally. Hence, it is imperative that we, as industry stakeholders, seek innovative solutions to mitigate this impact. Through the connections I made with local entities during the summit,I am now more committed than ever to addressing these environmental challenges head-on. This congress not only deepened my understanding of sustainability but also opened up new opportunities for collaboration and growth in our shared mission to create a greener future.
