When I was a kid, I thought flying cars from The Jetsons would be real by now. Well, it turns out they are closer to being a commercial reality than you may think. AutoFlight completed the world’s first inter-city electric air-taxi flight in China, between two cities that are 50km apart. It took 20 minutes, while the same trip by car would take three hours. The technology is called eVTOL: Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing crafts. No runway required, and they can hold five passengers. There are companies in the US (Joby Aviation) and Europe (Volocopter) also working to launch these to market. There are many regulatory challenges to overcome, not to mention business models to figure out. But it's exciting that the technology is getting closer to being ready.

Could this be the future of urban air mobility? This week, XPENG AEROHT made headlines with the first manned flight of its Land Aircraft Carrier eVTOL, followed by an announcement of their new production facility in Guangzhou—the first to utilize automotive-style mass production for large-scale flying car manufacturing. Set to produce 10,000 units annually, this 180,000 sq. meter facility includes four major workshops for composites, joints, painting, and assembly, merging aviation precision with automotive efficiency. With plans for a global debut at the China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition in November, XPENG AEROHT’s entry into the low-altitude mobility market demonstrates the company’s commitment to pioneering affordable and scalable urban air solutions.
