Yesterday 12th January 2024, marked the end of our Fall 2023-24 semester, with the Final Jury being conducted for the 7th semester students. This semester's topic of design was a Commercial Bank's Head Office branch. Our instructors were expecting a modernist design approach from the students. For my concept, I integrated the use of Aluminium Facade blades into an overall concept of Biophilic Design that generally revolves around sustainability. Therefore, a major dominating feature of my facade design was the use of green screens or green walls, which I have always wanted to implement in my projects. Another preference that I opted for in this project was the use of Stucco Cladding, due to its durable and sustainable nature. This corporate-level project was a good opportunity for me to learn the use of materials as well as develop basic knowledge on how to develop basements in commercial projects while making them accessible for parking purposes. It also allowed me to learn the use of base-isolation systems to prevent damage to the super-structures, during earthquakes. I would like to thank the course instructors, Dr. Vedia Akansu and Dr. İPEK YARALIOĞLU, and our jury member, Dr. Osman Göztaşı for their valuable feedback and guidance during the semesters and both the midterm / final term juries. I would like to mention my gratitude to Mr Muhammad Yasin, who was my supervisor during my summer internship, in 2023. It was due to his efforts and guidance that I had the privilege of working on government-based projects, which allowed me to have my initial exposure to the usage of materials, as well as Curtain wall glazings. These are called shear keys and are provided to resist shear failure and to ensure effective bonding of the mass concrete. The inward projection of concrete shown at the start of the video is a 𝐟𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲, while the outward projection shown later in the video is called a 𝐟𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲. Architecture is an art and a science. It is the practice of designing spaces for a specific environment while taking into account all the components that make up said environment. Every decision made in the process of architecture – from choosing materials to drawing windows to siting the building – has a huge impact on our daily lives as well as the environment we source from. Q: What makes Project Luong unique? Why do you choose to work here? Though I’m still at the very beginning of my career, the support I’ve had at Project Luong has helped me build the confidence and enthusiasm necessary to dive into an industry that can be so overwhelming. Every day, I am encouraged to try something new and to challenge myself in order to gain experience and knowledge, which has been so valuable. I do it instinctively now because I know that I have so many resources available thanks to the firm’s efforts to support its people. Q: How are you enjoying your PLA internship? What was the most interesting thing you learned or experienced thus far? I believe I lucked out with this internship. It’s been hard work, but so fun. I think the most interesting experience so far has been our design charrettes, where everyone gets to design based on the same prompt and then present our ideas to the entire team. It’s a fun way to learn more about each other’s processes and become more connected. Q: Who has been your biggest influence? I’ve been lucky to have many people in my life help guide me to where I am now, but I think my biggest influences have really been my older brothers, Christian and Gabriel. The way they carry themselves and handle everything that life throws at them is inspiring. Their unconditional support is what makes me want to make them proud. Q: What is your personal philosophy when it comes to architecture and design? Architecture is about constantly learning – it is an endless well of knowledge. There’s so much history and future in architecture. That is why I’m so excited to be on this journey. I know that no matter what part of my career I am in, I will always have something new to learn, new mistakes to make, new opportunities to prove myself and do more. Every single project is a completely different experience, and I believe that’s how design should be.

Why is hands on, real-world experience so essential for students? Robb Berg, Principal of Design Workshop, highlights the importance of shaping the next generation of landscape architects through involvement outside the traditional classroom environment. There is often a gap between the theoretical approach taught in the classroom and the practical application on real projects. "Working for communities and with clients means understanding construction budgets, managing time constraints, navigating material limitations, and many more challenges, all the while trying to create meaningful and impactful work," says Robb. It is important to invest in this upcoming generation of young professionals, and Design Workshop’s Design Week and the Dr. Charles Fountain Internship Program are two examples of how we are providing practical experience for undergraduate and graduate students.
