You have probably seen me posting about ICF and the credential and the webinar I ran recently. In my next few posts I'll be answering some common questions about it, starting with.... 𝗙𝗔𝗤: 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝘾𝙁 𝘾𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡? ✳️T𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗖𝗙 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 is a professional certification that indicates you have met specific standards and requirements designed to develop and refine your coaching skills. ✳️ ICF-credentialed coaches are professionals who have met stringent education and experience requirements and have demonstrated a thorough understanding of the coaching competencies that set the standard in the profession. Additionally, they adhere to strict ethical guidelines as part of ICF’s mission to protect and serve coaching consumers. I think of the ICF credentialling process as a way of standardising coaching skills because it reflects high standards based on a set of core values and competencies and provides a reliable, measurable and provable way to demonstrate your knowledge and expertise as a professional a coach. ⚠️ Coaching is still a largely unregulated profession where, for example, you can become a qualified life coach by doing a $7 course on Facebook and anyone can call themselves a coach. ✳️ Earning an 𝗜𝗖𝗙 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 provides you with instant credibility and increased visibility to prospective clients. ✳️ It shows your clients and peers that you are committed to the coaching industry and to developing yourself as a coaching professional. And holding a credential – especially an 𝗜𝗖𝗙 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹– is extremely important to today’s coaching clients. ❕ The 2022 Global Consumer Awareness Study found that  𝟖𝟓% 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙨𝙖𝙮 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙧 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙨 𝙖 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡 or 𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 If you have questions or want to find out more about how it can help you as a coach then let's have a conversation! 📣 What is coaching? 🗣 This is one of the questions I ask in my new course. 🎤 When I did my talk at the BACP conference I cited this: 'A non-directive form of development focusing on improving performance and developing an individual' 📖 This definition is from the CIPD Essentially this is the same as the BACP but for HR and personnel professionals. 👩🏼⚕️ As therapists, we don't tend to focus on performance. 👐🏼 Though we can support our clients with developing capacity that impacts performance. As a business coach, I often help people with performance in areas such as: ➡ interviews ➡ presentations ➡ public speaking ➡ investment pitches 📊 But it's often more nuanced. Please, do not call yourself a coach after a 2-week online course. Do not offer your ‘coaching services’ to 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 after completing a $7 course. You’ll most probably leave them disappointed and potentially 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻. Ads like this and those who take it are exactly what’s destroying the coaching industry and why organizations like the International Coaching Federation (ICF) exist—those that professionally train coaches while maintaining strict ethical practices. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 "$𝟳 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵" 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻 (𝗜𝗖𝗙-)𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵? Let’s just say, there are more than a few .😉 👇 For example, it took me 𝟮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟯-𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺—and thousands of dollars to become a professionally trained ICF-accredited executive coach. Because real coaching education and accreditation means: ✅ Rigorous academic training and real experience—not a 7-day or $7 shortcut. ✅ A deep commitment to ethics, confidentiality, and the integrity of the coaching process. ✅ Clear boundaries between coaching, therapy, and consulting (yes, these are different). ✅ Full respect for the client’s individuality—personality, culture, identity, and context matter. ✅ A safe, supportive space to tap into your resourcefulness and creativity. ✅ An ongoing dedication to personal and professional development. So please please please, 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘂𝘀, for those who are finally making their first steps towards growth and transformation—PLEASE DO NOT BECOME A $7 ‘CERTIFIED’ COACH. If in a coaching conversation you have noticed emotions arising, emerging physical sensations, or thoughts/styles of thought, stimulated by what your client has said, or how they have said it, then you are experiencing countertransference. Ignored, these experiences will impact your engagement with your client negatively. This could take the form of perpetuating unhelpful dynamics within the client, between practitioner and client, and between client and their environment. Countertransference is often stigmatised in coaching, because it's a 'psychological' concept. Unavoidably, every interaction between people involves psychological phenomena. 'Demonstrates Ethical Practice' and 'Embodies a Coaching Mindset' are mandates for coaches to at least understand the presence of what is happening implicitly (psychologically) in the coaching relationship and if the content is best suited to coaching or other modalities. 'Evokes Awareness' offers a number of options for the coach to notice and actively respond to these phenomena, in a coaching way.
