Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing has been appointed acting president of Myanmar, replacing Myint Swe, who is unable to perform his duties due to health issues. This announcement follows Myint Swe's reported illness, which has been affecting him since early this year. The appointment comes ahead of the renewal procedures for the state of emergency originally declared when the military seized power in February 2021. As acting president, Min Aung Hlaing is authorized to handle matters related to the National Defense and Security Council, which is crucial for renewing the state of emergency that grants the military extensive powers. The military justifies the state of emergency as necessary to address instability caused by opposition armed groups.
