How the SBIR & STTR Programs Can Benefit Small Innovative Companies (2023 Update) The Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) and Small Technology Transfer Innovation Research (STTR) programs can be beneficial in providing early stage R&D funding to small innovative companies across industries and technology areas. Intending to draw innovative solutions from small companies by funding feasibility analysis through prototype demonstration, the federal government aims to commercialize technology that will not only benefit government agencies, but the public as a whole. This course will provide an overview of the programs, the phases, pitfalls, and best practices for proposals, post-award considerations, and commercialization review. After completing this training, you will Understand the SBIR/STTR program, including eligibility and structure; Know critical elements of successful proposals; Know post-award considerations contractors should make prior to submitting a proposal. B Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. In order to achieve certification, a company must: Demonstrate high social and environmental performance by achieving a B Impact Assessment score of 80 or above and passing our risk review. Make a legal commitment by changing their corporate governance structure to be accountable to all stakeholders, not just shareholders. Exhibit transparency by allowing information about their performance measured against B Lab’s standards to be publicly available on their B Corp profile on B Lab’s website. As leaders in the movement for economic systems change, B Corps reap remarkable benefits. They build trust with consumers, communities, and suppliers; attract and retain employees; and draw mission-aligned investors. As they are required to undergo the verification process every three years in order to recertify, B Corps are by definition also focused on continuous improvement, leading to their long-term resiliency.

WOSBs and EDWOSBs...GSA and APEX Accelerators are teaming up for a webinar on August 22nd at 2pm ET on how WOSBs and EDWOSBs can market to the Federal Government. The SBA's WOSB Federal Contracting Program has a governmentwide statutory goal to award at least 5% of federal contracting dollars to WOSBs at both the prime and subcontract levels. Yet, with 646 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) industry codes (out of 1,023) in which WOSBs (and EDWOSBs) are substantially underrepresented, the Federal Government has only met the prime contracting goal twice. Big thanks to NSCA for honoring Hyphn Studio with the Excellence in Business Award for Business Performance at their annual Business Leadership Conference in February! As we approach five years developing our Workplace Technology business, I often reflect on not only the lessons we've learned as a startup, but also how our leadership team has used those lessons to implement real change to improve both employee and customer experience. It's not easy and takes a lot of dedication and listening. It's all in keeping with one of our #CoreValues - #WeNeverSettle. Some key takeaways from the first five years - Clearly define the role - What is my role, and how does it relate to others' in the context of providing the best employee and customer experience? In a startup, it's easy to start by wearing a lot of hats. As you grow and become more specialized, it can be difficult to take those hats off. #RoleClarity has been hugely important in both achieving results and driving accountability. Clearly define the process - How does every role do their job in the best way possible and set other roles up for success down the line? Revenue targets and KPIs are important - but that's only the WHAT. Defining the HOW you get there as a team is equally (if not more) important for long term sustainability. Transparency & Communication - How is our team performing compared to our goals and vision? Nothing is worse than vague aggression from leadership to achieve goals that aren't clearly defined and no one can see. Operating System - As the market and buying trends change, how are you adapting your roles and processes quickly and efficiently to keep up? Treating our holistic process (including onboarding, career development, and project delivery) as an "operating system" that can be iteratively upgraded has made us more nimble and ready to handle changes as they come. Set up a consistent framework, and engaging the team to make small improvements throughout the year becomes easy - and can even be FUN!
