Humanity should not exceed certain thresholds related to nine biophysical processes, which are considered critical for the Earth's functioning. These thresholds are divided into safety thresholds, which are limits that, if exceeded, could lead to irreversible environmental changes, and risk thresholds, which are limits that, if exceeded, could lead to major climate disruptions. Sustainable Ocean Alliance young ocean leaders taking #oceanaction at #ClimateWeekNYC 🌊✊ This week, a group of SOA young leaders met with Dr. Richard (Rick) Spinrad—the Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere & NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Administrator—to talk through a number of ocean issues most important to their generation. Convergence research is one such approach that seeks to tear down disciplinary silos through creativity and innovation to co-create new frameworks. This talk will elaborate on an ongoing convergence research collaboration with the Colonias communities in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands that reveal water injustices experienced by the Colonia residents and ultimately identify potential solutions. Sharing findings from our methodologically innovative project, the talk will expand on the opportunities that bridging participatory approaches and convergence research brings to support novelty, creativity, and more policy-relevant to the phenomenon studied. https://lnkd.in/ed45cf8K.

We will explore the challenges faced by Indigenous peoples and local communities in contributing to climate negotiation; collaborating with scientific communities; and in taking action to shape their environments. We will explore how local and Indigenous perceptions of climate change can converse with scientific understandings of the same, engaging the attention of a wider public and policy makers, and how far such understandings are enabled by contemporary states. Through interdisciplinary engagement the conference intends to facilitate collaborative knowledge production across scientific and Indigenous perspectives, enabling the creation of meaningful and impactful climate legislation and policy. We need to value and incentivise boundary people (and boundary tasks, boundary organisations, boundary mechanisms of many types) to deal with complex/wicked issues like climate adaptation. This came up in our recent work on the competencies of adaptation professionals and great this is also being emphasised here.

How do we name the "in-betweeners?" Inspired by Debra Roberts' documentary, as a "boundary person" and a follow-up conversation with her, I have been thinking a lot about what this incredibly important grouping of people, who are often not recognised as a distinct grouping, precisely because they usually lie in the "in-between". In fact they are so unrecognised that there really isn't a mainstream term for them - or at least not one I have come across. Terms I have heard: "bridge-builders"; "dot-connectors"; "intermediaries"; "interlocutors"? And yet they are everywhere, either out of choice or circumstances. Because to make progress on our biggest issues requires that bridges are built, siloes are dismantled. If you are one of these people, what would you call yourself? Or what is your preferred term?
