The canal and river trust employ around 1800 people in such a variety of roles that we have a few hundred job titles. The number of paid employees has stayed fairly constant over many years, though the roles have evolved and job titles have changed. This is particularly true in the growth in the number of volunteering leaders we have, to help manage the 4,600 volunteers who now help us; for many, the role of volunteering leader is the first step on the ladder towards a line management position. We formally started working with volunteers in 2007, when we were still British Waterways and these days roughly 1 in 5 hours of work at the Canal & River Trust is delivered by a volunteer and we would be completely lost without them. We have a plethora of volunteer roles from volunteer lock keepers to volunteer rangers and volunteer reservoir inspectors to volunteer archivists. We work as one team so much so that sometimes we struggle to recognise who is paid and who is not. In this picture, there are 12 people who carry out work for the Trust – 4 are paid and 8 are volunteers. Unless you know them already, I think you would be hard pressed to identify which is which. You can check out our vacancies for paid roles here Canal & River Trust | Careers Center | Welcome (icims.com) You can check out our volunteer opportunities here Opportunities | Canal & River Trust (canalrivertrust.org.uk) The Canal & River Trust does what it can to ensure our historic navigations can be used in the pursuit of happiness by those, both on the towpath and on the water. The Canal & River Trust has a steadily reducing financial support from the UK Government and so we therefore need your support, both from individuals and corporate partners, to keep canals open and alive. Check out our website www.canalrivertrust.org.uk for more details of how you can get involved and help. #keepcanalsalive

"When you apply, we kindly ask you to remove your schools from your resume." 🙌 Can we all take a moment to appreciate how Groundswell Fund is practicing true inclusivity by adopting equitable and fair #hiring practices? Their hiring process requires applicants to REMOVE any references to undergraduate and graduate school names to reduce #bias while recruiting candidates. This helps create a level playing field for all applicants and helps assess them based on what they actually bring to the table, instead of just #tags. #shoutout #equitablehiring #inclusivity #hiring

I once had this supervisor who told me that every time the phone rang at work, it wasn’t a problem but an opportunity to be helpful. That really resonated with me and re-instilled the fact that property management is a care industry. Anyone can move snow and cut grass. It’s not rocket science. But choosing a path of providing service and care for others, is a conscious choice, to bring Community together. It’s not about us, you, or me. It’s about them. Once we check our own egos, everything else falls into place. #penco #pencomanagement #CommunityAssociationManagement. #community

This is such an interesting perspective.
As CEO of Bonsai Leadership Group, I help nonprofit organizations recruit and retain talented professionals. Author, "When Black Women Rise." 🌳
The environmental nonprofit sector is about to change in a big way. E&E News shared a recent article that 100% reflects what I’ve noted: “High-profile conservation groups and environmental nonprofits are hunting for new leaders after their current heads resigned or announced their plans to exit.” In addition to Resources for the Future, Defenders of Wildlife, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, and Union of Concerned Scientists who are all named in the article, National Forest Foundation and the Trust for Public Land recently announced they’re seeking new CEOs. Fifteen years ago, nonprofits needed to rebuild their financial resources after 2008’s Great Recession. So, boards looked for visionary executives with deep skill in fundraising and relationship building. Today, stakeholders across identities are watching how DEIJ efforts are showing up within nonprofit organizations. While some leaders can pivot with the times, others may lean on one particular strength for years and years. Today, nonprofit leaders are faced with changing demographics of their teams, partners and communities they serve. Boards have to be strategic about finding new leadership who are both attuned to your organization’s needs AND the audiences you’re trying to reach today (vs. fifteen years ago.) The thing is, most environmental nonprofit boards are predominantly white … yet they’re the ones making the hiring decisions. Bias creeps into the hiring process as we unintentionally seek out leaders who look like us, think like us, speak like us, or even went to the same school as us. Board leaders should consider partnering with a nonprofit executive recruitment firm like Bonsai Leadership Group LLC with demonstrated experience in sourcing diverse candidate pools. A team that understands your goals, challenges, opportunities and what you’re facing over the NEXT fifteen years and can help you attract BIPOC candidates that have the talent and passion to positively impact your organization. Maybe you don’t need a CEO with a PhD in Environmental Science, or someone with thirty years of leadership experience in conservation. Instead, maybe you can find a new leader who: 🌱 inspires donors, community members, and employees … 🌱 can build a rockstar team … 🌱 can set the strategy, align direction, and create impact … 🌱 and is totally passionate about reaching and serving historically excluded and underrepresented audiences. As Adriane Alicea, managing director of Green 2.0, says in the piece: “Leadership transitions [are] an exciting opportunity to bring in a new vision for an organization.” How can we support your new vision? P.S. Shout out to Raj Bandyopadhyay for this photo. #Conservation #EnvironmentalNonprofit #NonprofitRecruitment #Boards #DiverseLeadership

𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐬...𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞?🕵🏼 I recently saw a healthcare executive give a window into his framework for deciding where to move his family. Like many in healthcare where talent shortages abound and competition is stiff, he can write his ticket to go anywhere he wants. He created a spreadsheet with various weighted factors—some of the top include: 🏡 Home Availability 🌳 Trees and Open space 🏦 Tax Climate 🎒 Schools 🍽️ Restaurants 🚦 Traffic Dozens of others I've talked to have similar analyses to guide one of their life's biggest decisions. As a recruiter, I see it as my responsibility to be able to give an accurate "lay of the land," not just in the hiring organization culture but in key aspects of the local region. This kind of white-glove care isn't common but can make a huge difference in helping top talent decide to make a big move that includes relocation. Fortunately, I have a national network that allows me to get the "offline" scoop on what a region and its neighborhoods are like. In my backyard, the Greater Philadelphia Area, for example, many don't know that we're the Garden Capital of America with many great arboretums including Longwood Gardens, considered the finest public garden in the world. This means that, for many, strolling gardens and nature preserves are a regular part of a flourishing life. We're not placing people, we're guiding them into a good fit for them and their families for long-term success, at work and home.
