The concept of Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is integral to creating a more inclusive and flexible higher education system, as it allows individuals to leverage their previous learning experiences, whether gained through work, military service, or other non-college environments, to advance their academic and career goals. Despite its potential, CPL faces several challenges. While 82% of institutions offer CPL options, only 54% accept these credits for transfer, revealing a considerable inconsistency in CPL application. Furthermore, challenges such as resource constraints, lack of faculty awareness, and the need for standardized practices hinder the effectiveness of CPL programs. How can institutions address the challenges of inconsistent CPL policies and lack of faculty awareness? What strategies can be employed to ensure a more effective and streamlined CPL process? The work we are doing at LivedX plays a significant role in this context by offering an e-solution that validates diverse learning experiences in both formal and informal spaces. By providing a clear, transparent, and streamlined way to award CPL credits, LivedX helps bridge the gap between prior learning experiences and education pathways, allowing learners to showcase their qualifications effectively and advance their educational credentials more rapidly. Last month the Association of Colleges in the UK advocated for a future where the government places more trust in colleges, driving forward the delivery of priority skills that are crucial for economic and personal growth. Their vision includes a unified funding scheme for 16 to 18-year-olds, along with "demand-led" funding that addresses the lifelong learning needs of adult learners. While we support AoC's initiative and understand that the path to successful career progression is multifaceted, we also want to shed light on ways those gained skills can be recognised and used. We can educate students and prepare them with the skills to meet the demands of the job market, but they also require a way to recognise and use those skills. Paper certificates can be tampered with or lost. Let’s empower our students with a portable, secure, verifiable way for them to show and use their skills dynamically. Our mission focuses on endorsing crucial skills development and providing recognition through portable and verifiable credentials. For the past two years, graduate enrollment of Black students has declined, and while it's too early to declare this a trend - particularly in light of a broader shift in applications and enrollment as detailed in CGS's most recent Graduate Enrollment and Degrees report (https://bit.ly/49eODMd)- it's important to take time this #BlackHistoryMonth to think about ways to increase access to higher education. As CGS discussed in our Microcredentials report, one potential avenue may be easily-accessed certificates which can then be combined with others in pursuit of a traditional degree or provide an easier pathway into a master's program. However, only about half of certificates can be "stacked", and only half of certificates provide simplified admissions into a degree-granting program (some certificates can provide both opportunities, and some provide neither). One case study is that of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, the largest HBCU in the nation. AT NCA&T, students who apply to and are not accepted into a master's program may be offered admission to a certificate program in a related field. Since many of the classes are shared, success in the certificate is a strong indicator of success in a master's degree, allowing students to demonstrate that they can excel in graduate education even if their undergraduate GPA or test scores may be lower. This particularly benefits students whose educational journeys have been disrupted. Still, questions remain about the viability of certificates as a pathway to increasing campus diversity, not least because of questions about eligibility for financial aid. Much more research is needed to answer these questions and ensure fair and equitable access to graduate education. Read the full microcredentials report: https://bit.ly/3SZmcvV
