22 May was a memorable day for associations. Brussels hosted the very first European Association Summit & Awards, organised by ESAE - European Society of Association Executives. VISITFLANDERS Convention Bureau has been the proud partner of this organisation "of association professionals for association professionals" since 2018. Those association professionals were present in large numbers to elevate the profession and share knowledge. Among the 180 attendees: our Association Experts Tuya Beyers, Gemmeke De Jongh (she/her) and Milo Vergucht. Evelyne Bardyn had the most fun job on this beautiful evening: making people happy 🤗 Our Head of Convention Bureau handed out the Impact Award, rewarding the project that focuses on the overarching vision and values of an association than on its day-to-day operations. 🏆 The deserved winner was Cycling Industries Europe, with a campaign which successfully influenced the EU Commission to adopt an overarching strategy on cycling. By the way: cycling — isn't that one of the domains in which Flanders is a world leader? That's right: you can't find a better location for your conference than the region where the average family owns 3 bicycles 🚲🚲🚲 #associations #conferences #cycling #EAS24

These two days in Planica (SLO) with the promising young Nordic skiers were wonderful. In January, we started a path that aims to #involve and #listen more and more the young athletes on sustainability issues. It is a project to make #athletes truly protagonists of #change. The role of FIS in this project is to #inspire and #facilitate their ideas, treating all their ideas with respect, even the strangest - which sometimes is also the winning one. It was nice to see how even those initially less tempted found the #inspiration to participate by making their own contribution. I think this drive is due to the #possibility of putting an #idea into action, giving it shape, making it #tangible. A big #thanks to all the people involved! Secondly, this is just testimony to how BIG Mountain Biking culture is in South Africa! Working with international people in the #cyclingindustry, I often get the feeling everyone deems 'their country' as "the mecca" of cycling, and disregard all other countries or sub-divisions of cycling. Have you seen how big the African continent is compared to USA? 🤔 But, the general assumption is, we ride lion's in our backyard, not professional, top-tier mountain bikes, like Greg Minnaar as well. 😝 "What do we know in Africa?!" #cyclingnews #marketing

BigMat, a leader in building materials, will contribute to various UCI World Championships, including road, track, cyclo-cross, and mountain bike events. My short thoughts on pro cycling's business model....

We are in the middle of cycling's 'Holy Week' in Belgium - the week between the Sunday of the Tour of Flanders and the Sunday of Paris-Roubaix. The best teams and riders in the world race these one-day classics and hundreds of thousands of spectators line the routes in Flanders and northern France. Due to the nature of the event, the organisers are not able to charge spectators an entry fee. Their revenue comes from broadcast rights. Do the organisers share that revenue with the athletes? No, is the short answer. How do riders get paid? Their teams get sponsorship deals worth 20, 30, 40 or 50 million Euros annually. Are these sponsorships value for money? Great question - who knows? There have been many efforts to change the business model, but so far, none have worked. Perhaps the sport needs a European version of 1980s Australian Kerry Packer as a disrupter? Anyway, we will be amongst the crowds in 2025 and riding our own roads during Holy Week at our Spring Classics tour. https://lnkd.in/gj_ubvy2

🚳 Campagnolo out of Worldtour! In 2024, no top-tier cycling team will ride on a groupset by the Italian brand. Only the Professional Bardiani team will be equipped by Campagnolo ⛔ It's a pity for the Italian bike industry? Sure! ❓ Is it going to be a problem for Campagnolo? In my opinion... no, the opposite! ⁉ Why? Because not even two victories in a row at the Tour de France with Tadej Pogacar look have boosted the Italian brand in the road racing bike market. In the meantime, the gravel groupset Ekar did. Obviously, the brand is no longer linked to the professional road cycling it used to be in the last seven decades. And the road market is driven by OEM equipment, where Campagnolo's presence is almost zero. In my opinion, leaving Worldtour as a sponsor, they can address more money to develop new products, i.e. a gravel groupset that is more afforfdable or a wireless electronic one. In Italy, we say, it is just a door shut behind you, but a portal opens in front of you! 💪 Go Campagnolo, go! ⁉And what do you think, is this a defeat for the brand from the Italian city of Vicenza or the beginning of a new era? #cycling #bikeindustry #marketing
