Education IS economic development! Cheers to the NC Commerce LEAD team on this study, which yielded a body of data that supports what our NC Portrait team already knows - integrating durable skills (often called "soft" skills) into classrooms will better prepare students for their futures.

This Forbes piece by Derek Newton covers a recent national survey of employers on the value of college. There's a lot to digest here, but most interesting to me is the news that employers prefer a college degree plus badges or micro-credentials much more than micro-credential alone or degree alone. That's exactly what we're doing at Florida Gulf Coast University by approaching badges as a supplement to our degrees - the power of "and." Not only that, but the survey shows employers value micro-credentials in both technical job specific skills like software applications and broad transferable skills like critical thinking - again, exactly the way we're doing badges at FGCU. I wonder how this is succeeding? Having worked in higher education for 15 years and business and government for much longer, I think a big reason a great many jobs require college degrees is because many (if not most) secondary school systems in 21st Century America [generally] fail to produce coherent high school graduates that can think, read, write and do basic math at levels expected. One way employers help to ensure they hire those who can actually function at 12th grade levels...is to see college degrees or at least significant college work done by applicants. The first two years of general studies in college today have become (costly) coverage for what students failed to learn in public schools. Not always, but far too much. Governor Youngkin is rolling the dice, but he's right to do so. Much pressure should be redirected into ensuring that our elementary through secondary school systems actually teach and graduate students who can then contribute to the success of America's workplace.
