When universities organize conferences, the chance of coming away with useful, directly applicable information, is far from high. But this is one conference that I'd love to attend. Recommending to my accessibility-minded peeps. I used to measure the accessibility needs of my students by the number of official letters of accommodation I'd received. That was until the pandemic went through our lives and I realized that in its aftermath *all* of my students need accessibility accommodations. Sometimes because of diagnosed disabilities. But sometimes simply because life is hard and confusing. I have never believed that kids who don't cope immediately should be "culled" from any educational environment before they've figured it all out. I've always seen my educator role as a helper and enabler, not as a gate-keeper. The current tides are unprecedented: The chaos of the past few years has brough to the surface so much hidden struggle and hardship. At the same time, we've never before had so much information, so many tools, and so much opportunity to lift people up. Information does not always equal understanding and empathy. Tool availability does not mean we necessarily do something to help. Doing is a matter of choice. But dang it, educators of all people should be actively making that choice.
