The North Texas Food Bank is thankful for CVS Pharmacy customers for partnering with us as we work to close the hunger gap in North Texas. Texas now ranks as the hungriest state in the nation, and the 13 counties served by the North Texas Food Bank have the fourth-highest number of people experiencing food insecurity in the country, with nearly 778,000 of our neighbors facing hunger. Through the support of its customers, CVS Pharmacy granted the NTFB nearly $119,000—or enough to provide access to close to 360,000 meals. Grant funds went toward NTFB’s general operations and its vision for a hunger-free, healthy North Texas. Read more at https://lnkd.in/gZvc4Rc2.

Second Harvest has released its annual report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. Check it out by visiting our website using the link below. The food bank remains steadfast in its mission to alleviate food insecurity across East Tennessee. Despite ongoing efforts, the challenges for food insecure households have intensified. According to the most recent Map the Meal Gap data, 202,560 East Tennesseans, including 44,860 children, are food insecure. This represents a significant 26% year-over-year increase, driven by inflation and other economic factors. In FY'24, SHFB-ETN distributed 26.3 million pounds of food (including 6.2 million pounds of produce), the equivalent of 21.9 million meals. “While these stats are impactful, they only meet 57.7% of the need.” says Executive Director, Elaine Streno. “To fully bridge the meal gap, 16.1 million additional meals need to be provided annually in East Tennessee.” Read more in our 2024 annual report.

Mars Food & Nutrition in the UK has partnered with The Trussell Trust, for the fourth year in a row, to support their network of over 1,300 food banks and help provide access to the nutritious meals we all deserve. Throughout October, shoppers were able to actively contribute to making a difference, with a 10 pence donation for every pack purchased online during the activation period. Standing against hunger is more important today than ever before. The Trussell Trust predicts that this winter will be the busiest winter on record. For the first time, The Trussell Trust's network of food banks expect to provide more than 1 million food parcels between December and February – equating to one parcel every 8 seconds (11,500 a day). In line with our Mars Food & Nutrition Purpose – Better Food Today. A Better World Tomorrow – we share the Trussell Trust’s vision of a future where no one needs to use a food bank. #BetterFoodTodayBetterWorldTomorrow #ProudlyMars

Food insecurity — the lack of access to sufficient food, particularly nutritious food, due to limited financial resources — has devastating consequences for health, social, economic, and educational outcomes. FEI works to increase access to nourishing food. Our Food Is Medicine Home program provides clients with produce and shelf-stable foods each month. When you give to FEI, you are ensuring that those experiencing both food insecurity and a diet-treated condition can get the food is medicine they need. Please share this post to show your support of our work. #kcmo #kck #food #kcfoodie #foodinsecure #donate #nonprofit #kcnonprofit #nonprofitconnect #kansascity #foodismedicine❤️ #foodismedicine

Starting on November 23, 2023, all donations to FoodShare, up to a total of $15,000, will be matched and will go twice as far in supporting our work to combat food insecurity. This includes one-time gifts or your first month when you sign up as a new monthly supporter. Food is a right, and FoodShare is committed to breaking down barriers that prevent people from accessing the food they need and want to eat. Donors play a vital role in sustaining this work all year round, often supporting important work that does not get as much visibility. The cost of groceries in Canada rose by 10.8% in 2022 — the fastest increase in the typical grocery bill since 1981. Prices continue to rise in 2023 and are predicted to increase up to an additional 7% as the year comes to a close. It’s clear that advocacy around food justice and challenging the systems that hold poverty in place — both internally and externally — must remain at the heart of FoodShare’s work. FoodShare’s Good Food Markets program seeks to close this affordability gap by providing subsidized access to fresh, high-quality, and culturally appropriate produce in neighbourhoods where it might not otherwise be available. From September 2022 - August 2023, we saw 45 Good Food Markets operate across the city and launched 9 new Good Food Markets benefitting 70,000 residents in low-income neighbourhoods. As Foodshare tackles these big, systemic issues, they rely on donations that allows them to put resources where they’ll be most needed — and where they’ll make the biggest impact. They need your help as they continue to share our resources with committed folks who have imagined what an equitable food system looks like for their communities, and need our support in making it a reality. If you can, please donate to continue supporting FoodShare’s work on food justice. https://lnkd.in/g7Ym-mPV

For many, celebrating Independence Day means fireworks, family and time off. However, for others in our community, it means that food programs are shuttered or have reduced hours. Before the holiday, please consider making a donation 💗 to your local food shelf. If your gift is products, please make sure to provide hygiene items 🪥🧼🧴 in addition to food. Hygiene insecurity and food insecurity go hand-in-hand. Let’s support more basic needs of our neighbors. With Easter weekend coming up, RLC sends well wishes to all those who celebrate! 🐣 🍫 🍬 For many, Easter calls to mind baskets of candy, colorfully dyed eggs, and meals shared with loved ones. Last year, the category that U.S. consumers planned to spend the most on for the Easter holiday was food, at $7.3 billion nationwide. It was followed by clothing at $4 billion, gifts at $3.8 billion, and candy at $3.3 billion. This year, RLC challenges you to make sure fewer of your Easter purchases end up in landfills - especially food items. Here’s how: If you’re a business, one of the best things you can do is to donate leftover Easter products to a food rescue organization (like RLC), which will redistribute them to those in need. It’s such an easy way to brighten someone else’s holiday! The Food Donation Improvement Act releases you from liability when donating. Read more about protective legislation for food donors here: https://buff.ly/3PDZojl For individual households, consider repurposing or freezing Easter leftovers rather than discarding them. One of my favorite childhood breakfasts was scrambled eggs with leftover Easter ham and cheese. I looked forward to my dad making it every year. It’s a sustainable tradition that I can’t wait to pass down to my own family. This holiday weekend, feed people, not landfills. Anyone can reduce wasted food by being mindful and creative! #wastedfood #sustainability #foodinsecurity #foodrescue #donate #endhunger #excessfood *This post was created by a University of Rhode Island student named Hannah, who is generously volunteering her writing services to Rescuing Leftover Cuisine. Thank you so much for your support Hannah!

Updates on several fronts! Food insecurity initiative: I just applied to three more grants: Principal Foundation Grant, Hunger to Health Collaboratory, and the Kathy J Pedersen grant. The first one is by invitation only, so we may find out soon. The later two will not have any results until September or so. Assuming none of them will come through, as many of these organizations do not understand how challenging it is for people living with ME and Long COVID are to prepare meals, or to afford food that are uncanned, unpreserved, gluten and/or dairy free, I plan to organize a national virtual bake sale in late October to early November hoping to raise funds helping some of you who are struggling without a voice. A silent auction is another possibility if needed. More to come. But this is it for grant application for me. Caregiver support group: One family member brought up to me today that he is interested to join an in-person support group for caring for a loved one with ME or Long COVID. At this time, I am looking for someone besides me to run this group once a month at a centralized location in the Twin Cities. Please post your ideas on this feed. If people in other locations are interested in starting one, please also say something here. I appreciate you all for believing in me, trusting me wholeheartedly, and caring about me. I hope to return the same favor back to you all. #longCOVID #mecfs #MyalgicEncephalomyelitis #caregiversupport
