In discussions with VBC companies and my network, this Patient Activation Measure (PAM) study keeps emerging related to effective Complex Care Management. It provides valuable insights into the baseline levels of patient self-management using the PAM-13 tool across four chronic diseases states. By grouping PAM Levels 1 and 2, a distinct hierarchy of low patient self-management skills becomes apparent across different diseases. With Chronic Kidney Disease and Congestive Heart Failure patients, a significant majority exhibit low PAM scores. This contrasts with COPD and DM2 patients where approximately half of patients show low PAM scores. I hope my fellow Pop Health enthusiasts find this instructive.  “With the COMBINE-CT project, we want to improve the care pathway for coronary artery disease, the most common heart disease.”, said Bert van Meurs, Chief Business Leader Precision Diagnosis and Image Guided Therapy at Philips. “The introduction of new technology creates more data that we can use for diagnosis and treatment. In the search for effective COVID-19 treatments, the role of Vitamin C has been under the spotlight. A recent report by Nathanial Schreiner, PhD, MBA, RN, sheds light on the findings from two randomized control trials investigating the use of Vitamin C in treating hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The World Health Organization initially highlighted Vitamin C as a potential immunomodulatory agent against COVID-19, aiming to address symptoms like oxidative stress and microvascular thrombosis. A meta-analysis of COVID-19 trials hinted at Vitamin C reducing hospital mortality. However, the reality uncovered by the two trials involving 2590 patients tells a different story. It's #WorldHeartDay and I want to share some key facts about the impact and burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in our Region.   With over 19 million deaths worldwide, CVD continues to be the biggest killer across the world – a trend that had begun to change in the 90s, and that in the past 20 years has been back on the rise, and even more recently with the aftereffects of the COVID 19 pandemic and the increased burden to already strained healthcare systems.   Last year, in collaboration with Deloitte and Prof. Rifat Atun from Harvard University, a report was published focusing on the impact and burden of CVD in LATAM with key recommendations on how to address the main challenges around this disease.   I’ll let you look into the details of this report, however one thing that stood out for me, and that is reflected in the approach we have taken at Novartis, is the critical role that public-private partnerships and collaboration have if we hope to change the CVD story in our Region.   This is not a one-person job; it is not an occasion where divide and conquer will lead us to success. which is why it has been inspiring to see how our teams in the countries have put partnerships at the core of our strategy. We are finding new ways of bringing all the healthcare stakeholders like payers, healthcare professionals, policy makers, patient advocacy groups and the pharmaceutical industry to the table to discuss and take effective action to build a sustainable healthcare legacy for our countries.   What do you think should be the main focus of healthcare stakeholders to bend the curve of CVD impact in our Region? Last week, the Global Heart Hub (GHH) published its landmark manifesto calling on policymakers to implement eight tangible, evidence-based actions to ensure early diagnosis and detection of cardiovascular disease (CVD) – a first for the CVD patient community. The Health Policy Partnership is proud to have supported the research and drafting of the manifesto. HPP worked closely with GHH leadership and the organisation’s global network of members. CVD places enormous pressure on health systems globally; delayed or missed diagnoses have profound consequences, leading to increased mortality, morbidity and healthcare costs. With the number of people living with CVD worldwide expected to double between 2020 and 2050, early diagnosis and prevention are crucial to improving people’s outcomes as well as limiting the burden on health systems. Unfortunately, many disparities still exist in the diagnosis and treatment of CVD. Nearly 80% of CVD deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The actions outlined in the manifesto have therefore been designed to consider the unique challenges faced by LMICs, such as low health literacy and insufficient health system infrastructure. The manifesto was developed with the involvement of more than 125 patient advocates and 40 CVD patient organisations, including the World Heart Federation and the European Society of Cardiology, and multidisciplinary leaders from across the world.
