Travelling Europe, the flu was bound to catch up with me, so over the week I have utilised down time to put pen to paper for World Data Exchange and assemble a 17 page overview on the significant advancements we are onboarding as an emerging Data Intermediary in the eHealth sector and beyond. The overview covers our Patient Centric data interoperability platform and Digi.me service built on FHIR-HL7 standards, featuring Data Portability, Privacy by Design, Security and features a user owned encrypted data vault with a seamless single API supporting various data ontologies. After a good edit, the document will soon be released to interested parties. As Australia awakes to Australia Day 2024, I feel very proud as an Australian female innovator abroad, currently deploying under the Dutch Ministry of Health Medmij eGov program our accredited Digi.me product built on WDX's sophisticated rails. I feel honored our brilliant Chairman Ken Wyatt AM brings his Indigenous health lens to our local efforts, for what we are now claiming the term #UHR (Unified Health Records). The time has arrived for better human centric eHealth unleashed by accessible, quality, permissioned data flow so the sector can deliver better healthcare, wellbeing and longevity services across our society, without limitations. I recently got together with 'Femi Banjo and Neel Majumder at HealthTechX Academy to discuss the landscape of digital health in Africa. Our conversation covered several key topics: 1. The Scale of Digital Health in Africa:   - The digital health sector in Africa is growing rapidly, with significant investments and a projected market value reaching billions of dollars by the mid-2020s. Key statistics and figures illustrate the increasing adoption of digital health solutions across the continent. 2. Top Trends in African Digital Health:   - Telemedicine: Expanding access to healthcare in remote areas.   - Mobile Health (mHealth): Leveraging mobile technology for health education and services.   - Electronic Health Records (EHR): Improving data management and patient care.   - Health Information Systems: Enhancing healthcare delivery through better data analysis and management. 3. Success Stories of Digital Health Initiatives:   - We highlighted several initiatives that have significantly improved access to essential healthcare services in low-income communities. 4. Opportunities for Entrepreneurs:   - There are abundant opportunities for new entrepreneurs to create impactful digital health solutions in Africa, especially in areas such as telehealth, mobile diagnostics, and health information systems. The growing need for affordable and scalable solutions in low-resource settings presents a fertile ground for innovation. 5. In-Demand Skills for Digital Health Careers:   - Skills such as data analysis, software development, and healthcare informatics are highly sought after in the African digital health sector. For those transitioning from other fields, gaining knowledge in these areas, along with understanding local health challenges, is crucial. 6. Challenges in Adopting Digital Health Technologies:   - Hospitals in low-income regions face challenges such as limited infrastructure, lack of trained personnel, and financial constraints. Addressing these barriers is essential for successful technology adoption. 7. The Future of Digital Health Technologies in Africa:   - We foresee a future where digital health technologies become integral to healthcare systems across Africa, driving improvements in patient care, health outcomes, and system efficiencies. In its 2023 report on public attitudes towards digital health, the Organization for the Review of Care and Health Apps (ORCHA) shared that survey participants overwhelmingly felt positively towards digital health solutions. Almost 8 out of 10 agreed or strongly agreed that to take pressure off the healthcare system, it is vital we all look at new ways to manage our health, including using high-quality health apps. A landmark report from the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe, covering all 53 Member States of the Region, calls for urgent investment, innovation and inclusion to reap the rewards #digitalhealth has to offer! ❗ The vast majority of countries in the Region (44) have a national digital health strategy and all 53 Member States have legislation safeguarding the privacy of personal data but... 📌 Only 19 countries have developed guidance on how to evaluate digital health interventions, which is vital to ensure they are safe and effective. 📌 Just over half the countries in the Region have developed policies for digital health literacy and implemented a digital inclusion plan. 📌 Thirty countries have introduced legislation to support telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic. 📌 Many countries still lack a dedicated entity responsible for oversight of mobile health (mHealth) apps, in terms of quality, safety and reliability, with just 15% reporting evaluations of government-sponsored mHealth programmes. 📌 Slightly more than half of the countries have developed a data strategy regulating the use of Big Data and advanced analytics in the health sector. ❗ Recommendations: 📌 Provide access to reliable, low-cost broadband for every household and every community. 📌 Ensure health data are safe and secure to help build and maintain trust in digital health tools and interventions. 📌 Make digital health tools, including electronic patient records, inter-operable within and between countries.

This https://lnkd.in/eahTayPM is a particularly extensive one, and just here's one of my takeaways: E-Health in Africa: A Double-Edged Sword? If we'll achieve good and fair #healthcoverage, then we must provide a suitable environment for e-health tools to thrive, as they're key. The widespread adoption of mobile technology and penetration of network coverage entices us to adopt these as a vehicle to drive health coverage and ease up the provision of healthcare. We already see the possibilities with online diagnostic tools, chatbots (that can now run autonomously on advanced LLMs), health/fitness trackers, educational resources, EMR systems, health financing, etc. Some of these devices even offer better healthcare than some PHCs😂. But here's the question of the day: can #ehealth tools actually reach everyone and boost coverage? Let's be careful with stats! They say 43% of Africans have network coverage, and isn't that promising at the first glance? If we dig deeper however, chances are that this 43% comprises mostly urban dwellers who already have access to reasonably good healthcare. E-health is a delightful bonus for them, not a lifeline. It's just a plus, it makes things easier, it encourages them, etc etc. What about the villagers? The ones who lack even basic PHCs, and are also lagging behind in access to technology? They're the ones playing 2-0, missing out on both traditional and tech-powered healthcare. So, the question hangs heavy: can ehealth truly bridge the gap if it leaves half the population behind? The answer, like most things in life, isn't black and white. We need to build ehealth with #inclusivity at its core, else, we'll only be widening the gap we're supposed to bridge. No fancy AI chatbots if there's no network to talk to them on. No slick apps if electricity is a luxury. We need solutions that work for everyone, not just the fortunate few. Countries have demonstrated the ability to scale #digitalhealth interventions and the evidence base is growing. The final frontiers are sustainability, adopting and innovating with emerging tech in a rapidly changing ecosystem, and ensuring that no one is left behind through a focus on #equity. The ability of countries to measure the state of digital health enablers, often overlooked, is critical to achieving national health priorities, including #universalhealthcoverage and #primaryhealthcare. The Global Digital Health Monitor (#GDHM) is a web platform that tracks the maturity of World Health Organization member states' digital health enablers. The Global State of Digital Health 2023 report provides a snapshot of digital health ecosystem enablers and progress made since the first report in 2019. In the lightning talk, I will outline the impact of the GDHM and how different stakeholders have used it to advance our understanding of the state of the field, including national performance metrics and regional insights. The session will present insights from 67 countries in 2023, compared to 22 countries before the 2022 relaunch. I will also present more advanced analyses that are underway by various partners and emerging trends. These trends will highlight overall progress and progress made along the seven enabling environments for digital health, including the adoption of emerging technologies, alignment to Universal Health Coverage, and Gender considerations.
