Slovak women are Champions of Europe! But being the first does not always mean victory - this is also the idea of the breast cancer campaign. 🏆 We are on the first rungs in the mortality rate from breast cancer within the EU. 🔎 Only 30% of women who are entitled to screening mammography actually visit it. 📍 Although the disease mainly affects women 50+, the almost 50% increase in incidence in the 35-40 age group also speaks for itself. Bold setting of the campaign, if you watch the short video you will definitely get goose bumps, it is a reality that we can change. Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) Awareness Day is aimed at raising awareness of the small percentage of women and men who live with this disease. While breast cancer is one of the most researched and talked about cancers, this particular type of breast cancer tends to get pushed to the sidelines, hence the importance of designating a day specifically to it during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Risk factors include: ·       Age (primarily women ages 40 and up) ·       Being a female ·       BRCA gene mutations ·       Family history ·       Dense breasts ·       Exposure to radiation during childhood ·       Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or other cancers ·       Identifying as an Ashkenazi Jew   MBC is rare in men, but risk factors for men include:   ·       Older age ·       Hormonal imbalance ·       Radiation exposure   The Annie Parker Foundation will continue to create programs and advocate for these people since it is one of the cancers included in our portfolio. A cancer diagnosis can be life-altering, and getting the right support all the way through the treatment journey is crucial. Prostate cancer is close to home for me. My dad was diagnosed with it in his 50s and is still alive and kicking at 86. Did you know that most men who live beyond 75 will get prostate cancer? So, all men are at risk and early detection is very important. Just as women have pap smears and check their breast health on a regular basis, so men must be checked for prostate cancer. I love facilitating panel discussions about important topics. I ran two such events about Prostate cancer for the staff of Distel (now The HEINEKEN Company) in an effort to encourage male employees to get themselves tested. According to research company, Eight20, in 2020, prostate cancer alone accounted for more than 22% of all male cancer diagnoses.
