It is with great sadness that we share this tribute to William (Bill) H. Tyler III, NPS Foundation Trustee, who passed away on August 13, 2024. Bill was an enthusiastic and engaged supporter of the Naval Postgraduate School. More importantly, he was enthusiastic about the students and their families and the contributions they make to our national security. Bill joined the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation Board of Trustees in 2016 and remained active in this role until the last few months. As a former pilot and missile project officer in the U.S. Air Force, Bill understood firsthand the importance of the many initiatives of the NPS Foundation & Alumni Association. He was truly committed to the student officers at NPS and enjoyed the many interactions with them during his time with us. In early 2023, Bill supported the creation of The William H. Tyler Award for Innovation in National Security Studies to recognize innovative work by student officers, working individually or as a team, whose research highlights the importance of innovation, collaboration and adoption of solutions related to national security. Bill made it a point to personally present the Tyler Award each quarter that it was presented and to connect with the recipients. The NPS Foundation, administrator of the award fund, is honored to continue presenting the award for Bill who wished for the Tyler Award to be of indefinite duration. With his wife Susanne by his side, the Tylers also supported many other local causes over their years in Pebble Beach. From their impactful support of the Tyler Heart Institute at Montage Health to the Carmel High School Foundation, Carmel Public Library Foundation, and Carmel Bach Festival, Bill and Susanne shared their time and joy for these important local causes. We will miss Bill’s presence at the NPS Foundation functions he so enjoyed. His smile and warm personality always added to the atmosphere of the events. We are certain that his philanthropic spirit will live on through his family and through the many ways he impacted our Monterey and Pebble Beach communities. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Susanne, their children and grandchildren, and their family and friends.

💐 Building a Legacy starts with an idea - an idea that considers the possible and then reaches for the impossible. It is not limited by the status quo, it is not constrained by the conventional. It looks passed what is and imagines what could be. It taps into a not so common theme that inspires others to build upon the idea, that together, we can make a difference for generations to come. It looks forward to the day that my children and the children of San Antonio will be able to sit in the shade of a tree that someone planted long ago... Happy Mother’s Day - May we continue Building Futures 💐 Port San Antonio, Kelly Heritage Foundation, Boeing Center at Tech Port, Centurion Military Alliance (CMA), Airman Heritage Group, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas, Our Community Salutes San Antonio (OCS SA)

Last night, I had the immense honor of attending the Sunset Parade, at the Marine Corps Memorial, in honor of Senator Ted Budd (R-NC). The Marine Corps’ sunset and evening parades are always beautiful, but I found myself a bit emotional watching last night. Last night, Kayla Haas served as Adjutant of the parade. For those unaware, it is incredibly rare to see a woman in the parade. It’s even more rare to see them leading it, as Adjutant. For generations, little girls saw Marines and had to question whether they could hold their own among the ranks of men. Sure, they could aspire to become a United States Marine, but they didn’t have a visual representation of what they were striving to become - a role model or a hero, if you will. Now, little girls across the country have the chance to SEE that they, too, can become United States Marines. It’s no longer simply a dream. It’s clear as day - they can break through ceilings, they can blaze new trails, and they can lead United States Marines. She did that. #marinecorps #marines #semperfidelis #betheone #washingtondc

As we get ready to welcome our 2024-2025 cohort of CAC AmeriCorps members next week, I'm thinking a lot about what it means to serve in the US today vs the early 2000's when I found a path that connected me to something bigger than myself, and gave me the tools to positively contribute. 🛠 Having grown up in a US Army family, my first introduction to national service was through the Military. My dad found the Army in his early 20's and it provided him a career pathway and a way to make a difference in the world around him that made sense for him. Having been a part of his journey, I found myself wondering what to do after college and serving in AmeriCorps NCCC made sense to me. It had echoes of Military service and the Civilian Conservation Corps, in structure, but was oriented around community-based work in the US which suited me. 🤝 With service struggling as a unifying principle in recent years, convenings of organizations like Peace Corps, the Selective Service System, and AmeriCorps, around their collective interest in engaging the next generation of servant leaders, has been encouraging. 💡💡 But lets dream even bigger and build on these efforts to connect to servant leaders working in government and non-profit spaces, faith-based communities, and individuals working in businesses to deliver on both the bottom line and the communities they serve. All a part of the same collective spirit to leave things better than when we found them.. for our children, for our country, and for ourselves. To be the people we aspire to be. ❤️ 💙 💚 💛 🖤 #service #nationalservice #americorps #peacecorps #selectiveservice #usarmy #americorps30 #communityaction #servantleaders #manypaths #onepurpose

He said, "You're not some charlatan on the Internet." Do you take breaks and get outdoors? Yesterday, I took a walk in the local George Washington State Park and Campground in Glocester, Rhode Island. This park has a fascinating history. In the 1960s, an Australian naval unit waited for their ship, the HMS Perth, to be completed in Newport. During their stay, they created a trail system in honor of Aboriginal culture, called the Walkabout Trail. Afterwards, I had a meeting with an old friend interested in investing. I enjoy meeting people and helping to raise awareness about real-estate investing. Yesterday, I learned, "Pete, you're doing it, and I know you; you're not some charlatan on the Internet." Trust is hard to build. I've known Walter Steere for more than 20 years. So remember, it takes time, and you may be seen as some charlatan on the Internet at first. My book on the only enlisted submariner to receive the Medal of Honor and his times has four reviews! The first two are by excellent naval historians, Dr. Joel Holwitt and Dr. Scott Hamm, two people who I respect greatly for their research. Both were full of praise and it gives insight into why this book should be read, especially for naval historians. Read them all here!: https://lnkd.in/dHErhMBi "Today, in the social media age, the thought that some years in the future after one’s death, the only traces that would remain of their life would be through professional or governmental records is almost unthinkable. But that is what Ryan C. Walker, author of The Silent Service’s First Hero: The First Submariner to Receive the Medal of Honor, had to contend with when compiling his very readable and compelling account of Henry Breault, the first submariner-and the community’s only enlisted member-to receive the Medal of Honor. Writing about a community that values its reputation as The Silent Service, and in which the CO is often the only recognizable face of the ship, it is often the enlisted sailor who stands at the point of friction and –orders or not—does the deeds for which the ship and service become lauded. Ryan uses the few extant records and a vast array of contemporary cultural touchpoints to write not only a microhistory of Breault that stands on its own right, describing his heroic actions and the life of sailors from the 1920s until his death in 1941, but also a call to arms to mobilize further research into the lives of men like Breault." Dr. Hamm “The Silent Service’s First Hero is truly a revelation. Ryan Walker’s book is one of the few histories to examine the pre-Second World War U.S. Navy submarine force, setting it apart from most submarine histories. More than that, however, he explores the experience of the U.S. Navy enlisted submarine Sailor, which is even more rarely chronicled. Readers will benefit from Walker’s thorough research, placing Henry Breault in the context of a very different time. Thanks to Walker’s exhaustive study, we now know far more about Henry Breault than simply the bare bones of his Medal of Honor citation – we know about his service in the Canadian navy and numerous other U.S. submarines, his complicated marriage, his evident leadership ability as a chief of the boat (without wearing chief’s anchors!), and even how to properly pronounce his name! Relying on sparse and often-vague documentation from over a century ago, Ryan Walker has crafted as full a portrait as we are likely to have of a submarine Sailor in the early 20th century U.S. Navy.” Dr. Holwitt

The Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Medal of Honor Foundation’s Mission is this: Mission: The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Medal of Honor, inspiring America to live the values the Medal represents, and supporting Recipients of the Medal as they connect with communities across America. One of the major tenets of the mission is “Preserving the Legacy” and “inspiring America to live the values the Medal represents”. Through education (the Foundations CDP Program) is one of the major ways we are able to do this. I have also attached a link to the shared website of The Congressional Medal of Honor Society and The Medal of Honor Foundation. CMOHS.org Due to the importance of preserving the Medal and educating the public I am sharing the process/chart The US Army uses. Each and every step in the chart has many more steps and components but this is the easiest way to learn about it. Recommendation Process Receiving the Medal of Honor is the highest honor bestowed by the American Military and personally presented by the President of the United States. Because of the need for accuracy the recommendation process can take in excess of 18 months and sometimes decadess with intense scrutiny every step of the way. The chart below outlines and demonstrate this process. It is truly the most intensely scrutinized and investigated award in the world.
