I was watching a fantastic show on Prime about the legendary Blue Angels. And I was struck with a powerful truth. Yes. The pilots are outstanding. They are, after all, American Naval Combat Fighter Pilots. That alone makes them the best at what they do. The fighter pilots selected for the Blue Angels represent less than 1% of the Navy's combat pilots. That truly makes them the best of the best. The pilots, however, do not make the Blue Angels' performance consistently stand out. How could they? The pilots serve only a 2-3 year term. If the pilots were the sole reason for the Blue Angels' success, the quality of the program would vary. It does not. Watch any show over any period and witness the same excellent results. That Diamond Formation in this picture is scary good. And it is every single flippin' time. To be clear, the pilots are outstanding. They are US naval combat pilots. Those men and women are badass. But a team like this is great because of the system that turns badass fighter pilots into a seamless team. There are approximately 25 supportive members for every one of the six Blue Angel pilots. The team has a robust training program for every position. Performance metrics are clearly documented, measured, and reviewed consistently. Every member of the team is confident in their role in the greater success of the team. They are confident in their personal authority. The team is highly psychologically safe. Strong open internal communication exists. A deep bench of recruits with a solid "apprenticeship" program also exists. When the newly selected pilot joins the program, they enter a system of excellence. "The people change. The suits stay the same." And it is this SYSTEM OF EXCELLENCE that makes the US military the best in the world. Taking on the Murph, I recently embarked on something completely new for me the Murph. Named in honor of Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, this challenge pushes physical limits and mental toughness to a whole new level. The Murph consists of a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, followed by another 1-mile run, all while wearing a weighted vest. It's not just about physical endurance; it's about honoring sacrifice and embracing resilience. Why did I take it on? IDENTITY Our identity is everything to us in our brand as Royal Marines 1. “Civvy 2 Commando” - The beginning of the transition from being a civilian to becoming a Commando. The very start of the journey is now, before you’ve even applied, before you’ve even stepped foot on Lympstone Commando train station. We want to get you so far ahead of the game that we start early. Civvy 2 Commando 2. “C2C” - We thought about this long and hard at the beginning and wanted something close to where our own personal stories began. “CTC”. Or, the “Commando Training Centre”. This is where boys become men, and where you must be successful to earn the coveted green beret. 3. The Commando Dagger - The infamous dagger of the Royal Marines. Worn on the sleeve of those who have completed Commando training, carried on the body armour of many Marine on the frontline, tattooed on the arm of many a Bootneck. This is our heritage and what it was all about from a very young age. 4. The Arch Shape - Shaped in the style of the flashes worn on the shoulders of every Royal Marine. They have recently changed in shape with the new red text coloured flashes (but we prefer the OG’s). 5. “99.99% Did Not Prepare” - There was an old advertisement slogan for the Royal Marines that read “99.99% need not apply” which alluded to the fact that the first time success rate was 0.01% and if you did not posses the mindset required, don’t bother filling in the forms. Our take on this is with real preparation, both physically in terms of fitness, mentally in terms of mindset and homework on military knowledge, what to expect in basic training and accountability & support from a Commando, anyone can prepare for Commando Training, and those who do fail simply weren’t properly prepared. The Career Transition Strategies Workshop facilitated by Noël McCall / MilBridge Consulting, LLC, was valuable to me. If you are transitioning, this is a good workshop to attend to help you prepare successfully. Although I have attended workshops and fellowships in the past covering transition topics in fine detail, I believe it is imperative to stay sharp and incorporate lessons learned to continually improve - especially when choosing the right company culture, position within your chosen passions, and path to pick the right job after the military. Here are some key takeaways from the workshop: *Military to Civilian Transition: Further focusing my resume, pitch, and interview response narrative. *One-on-One Coaching: Personalized guidance to refine my career path.  *Networking Strategy Improvement: Continuously working on uncovering hidden job opportunities. Networking goes beyond seeking job opportunities, as it allows you to help others as well. This is the area I seek most to improve, as it is a key differentiator for success. *Personal Branding: Understanding my brand, ensuring I was still on azimuth, and further refining/learning how to communicate it effectively. I was able to compare an assessment with similar ones to better ascertain my skills, strengths, and weaknesses. *Negotiating Offers: Setting expectations and exploring options. Yesterday, I had the unexpected pleasure of running into George Cassels at World Wide Technology ‘s Global Headquarters. We were both there for meetings, and it had been years since I last saw him in person. The genuine joy I felt just from seeing him for a brief moment speaks volumes about a few things: 1. The power of true friendship. 2. The lifelong camaraderie we build in the military. 3. The unique bond we share as US Army Signal Warrant Officers. 4. The joy that comes from sincerely rooting for others to succeed. When George and I first met, he was a Network Technician in the 82nd Airborne Division, and I held the same role in the 1st Cavalry Division. There was no competition, despite what our bosses might have said about who had the “better” Warrant Officer. Instead, we learned from one another and built a strong connection. Today, George is with Hewlett Packard Enterprise and I’m at Inspired Solutions and the best part is—we both genuinely want to see each other succeed. US Navy Chief Yeoman Jasmine LaRue, from Mobile, Alabama, has been serving for 12 years and is currently with Naval Special Warfare Command - Navy SEAL & SWCC Teams. We asked about her #CallToService, career progression, and how time in uniform has changed her. "My call to service is being a servant leader and making sure our #Sailors have all the support they need to support and complete the mission. When I joined back in 2012, I had no real goals or aspirations and made that decision because I did not want to go to college and did not want to stay in my hometown." #ForgedByTheSea "I have a goal I would like to reach before retiring and that’s to become a Command Senior Chief or a Command Master Chief, because in the current climate, it is getting harder for Sailors to continue in service and persevere through, in many cases at no fault of their own, in many cases it’s the leadership." #WhyIServe "I believe I can use my call to service to show Sailors there is leadership out there that cares and that they are not just a quota to meet or a billet to fill. I feel I can best do that as a Command Senior Chief or Master Chief." #Transform "I have changed in so many ways that even I still cannot believe it. I’m a college graduate now and I have been able to come out of my comfort zone and have many exuberating experiences. I have also become a person that strives to do and be more and I would describe myself as ambitious now compared to my past self." #People "Something I would like to share with anyone interested in joining the forces is to form your own opinions off your personal experiences. Negativity can spread like wildfire when you surround yourself with the wrong crowd. Surround yourself with personnel who have good character and have your best interest in mind. Remember we are a fighting force and completing the mission is important to sustaining our way of life in our country. It may not feel like it at times but remember that what you do is important no matter how minute you may think it is, because we each are a small piece of the bigger puzzle and working together is what will help complete the mission. Most importantly, stay true to yourself and your personal values as a human, and always make time to take of your mind, body, and soul."

When I speak to people I rarely mention the times I have won. Truth be told, I don’t talk about winning because it owns very little space in my head and yet the memories of the many times I have lost or failed at something are clear as can be. It is good to set your standards so high that you have to work your entire life to achieve the mark. Winning has never caused someone to lose sleep. Those who quit in Navy SEAL training walk over to a bell and ring it three times. Then they put their helmet on the ground. If a bell was by my bed, I would ring it every single morning. That is why I don’t own a bell. If your max for push-ups is 100 reps, those last 20 reps fucking suck bad. There is very little growth in the first 80 reps, the growth comes in the last 20 reps when all you want to do is put your knees on the ground and stop. What keeps you going when all you want to do is stop?! I can’t speak for everybody but what keeps me going is knowing the feeling I will have if I put my knees down before I get to 100. Losing and failing are big parts of life. Let it haunt you to be better. Stop using it as a crutch to give up! Some of the best moments in my life are when I have failed over and over again and then finally win/succeed. The thing about winning is once you go to bed after the big win, the win is already forgotten. The world moves too fast to celebrate you longer than that. Being great today doesn’t make it permanent. Don’t relish yesterday’s win for too long. You have to earn greatness every single day of your life!
